Has anyone driven a 6spd yet?

Wondering if anyone has driven a 6spd yet? I have one on order and was curious as to how the box felt, and how power delivery was through the gears.

I'm wondering the same thing...

The 228i I have on order is 6spd, but it's a different transmission from the M235i and won't be here until early April.

But, according to ETK, the gearboxes for the 2 cars are as follows:

M235i:
GS6-45BZ-THY8(same as 335i)

228i
GS6-17BG-TAU0(same as 328i and 528i)

I thought the one in the M235 was the same as what was in the 1M?

Well I don't know if this helps but it sure felt fantastic on the show floor last week!

Can't wait for the rev-matched version that is coming.

The part number for the 1M is GS6-45BZ-THD4, which would be same transmission, but different gear ratios and different bellhousing. I guess I would imagine it has a similar shift feel, but the one in the M235i matches the 335i (and 535i) exactly.

**edit**
Actually... same transmission, maybe same gear ratios, just different bellhousing? The last 4 digits are gear ratio and bellhousing, but what order?

The above contradicts this quote from official BMW 2-series pdf:

Transmission
A new 6-speed manual transmission will be standard equipment on both the 228i and M235i. The transmission has been borrowed from the upcoming M3/M4 and offers shorter throws and more precise shifting than the outgoing 1 Series 6-speed transmission

That's true. I'm just pulling info from etk.cc, which could be wrong:

228i Manual transmission

M235i Manual transmission

Who knows.

On the other hand maybe there is no contradiction, maybe the new M3/M4 unit is the same pedestrian one found in 335i, how disappointing.

The new WRX STI looks even more enticing now with its rod-actuated rifle-bolt MT. I hope I can get past the interior..

Honestly, which one would you believe, actual part numbers or a marketing blurb?

Actually what would be hilarious is if both were true. It'd mean the folks buying manual F80 M3s are getting the same tranny from the F30 335i! As if the butthurt over the S55 being too closely related to the N55 wasn't enough!

Just test drove the M235 with 6 speed. I drive a 135i 6-speed currently and compared to that, the shifts feel shorter, there's slightly less resistance, there is a nice notchy click when you shift in, esp. into 1st. Its a noticeable improvement on what is already good. Felt like I could shift faster in the 2er.

Sweet!!!!

Now the question is, will there be any CDV "delay" in feel…..
And if so, can it be removed like the "E" models.

I have the CDV removed in my 1er and I didn't notice any lag in the 2er but this was only a 10 min test drive.

Sorry to get off-topic, but was the last STI tranny cable operated? I would think the shift lever would extend right into the gearbox (needing neither a cable nor rod), since it's right below the shifter, no?

The new WRX STI tranny is variously described as going straight into the gearbox or using rods. I don't know which is true but in either case it is still better than cables.

Nice.

That is encouraging...my 6MT always felt nice in my first E82...if this feels better, that's a great thing.

LOL! You mean the truth = that it has 6 gears? LOL!
Hasn't that always been the truth about BMW manuals (precise YET rubbery!), but compared to other makes, I'll take it. I just want to make sure the clutch engagement improves. The CDV delete in my E92 made everything feel good.
But nothing will compare to a Tremec TKO600 for shifting "feel".

I just hope it isn't like what i've felt in the f30/f32. They just felt exceptionally sloppy, especially the 328, the 435 was a bit better.
