228i Exhaust Noise
Hello all,
I recently purchased a 228i M Sport with the n26 engine. I love the car! One of my fav BMWs I've owned for sure. Ive had it for about a month now and there has been two instances on cold-morning starts where about 15-20sec into the start up cycle the exhaust makes a noise similar to the flap in my old 335, only to disappear followed by an electronic sound. (video link below) It is still under the factory warranty and im wondering if I should make an apt. Have any of you experienced this? Thanks in advance! The sound at the end is normal. It's the exhaust flap opening after a cold start. Your car should do that all the time about a minute after starting the car. The rattle in the beginning is not normal but only a minor issue. I believe its a loose flap or just a random cold weather thing. There are other posts on this forum about it who were hearing the rattle consistently, and took it to the dealer to have it replaced under warranty. I've only had that happen on 2 occasions on really cold days (each a about a year apart), and never bothered doing anything about it. |

Have had this issue occur on my 2016 M235i maybe 2 or 3 times. After much research I have deduced it to be loose screws on the exhaust flap. Apparently the ones made for the F22 were not of sound quality. It is a minor issue that you can have replaced under warranty. I have been meaning to but have not gotten around to it as I work so much.

That is odd/concerning. I also own a 228i, when I had my stock exhaust on, it never made any sound/rattle as shown in the video. As others have said the electronic flap sound is normal. I would try a different dealership.

Can u make another video with the camera microphone a little further away and directly behind the exhaust...I'm just wondering if you initial video had some acoustic weird thing going on, even if u think your video replicates it well.

The dealer did say they looked it over and "tightened" everything up. I'm hoping that means the screw. It hasn't happened again, yet.
Here is another longer video with much more of the sound. https://youtu.be/bzDeUrrqZVE |
