AC Schnitzer Performance Upgrade
Hey Guys,
So I'm posting this here as there is no subforum for my engine. I have a 2016 218i Coupe (see garage). The engine is smooth and somewhat efficient however the torque is too low which presents some issues with the feeling. To overcome this I was thinking of tuning and looked into Dinan as many of you have that however, there is no kit available from them for my B38M. So I shifted my search to Europe. What came into my mind directly was AC Schnitzer as it is a know and respected brand. Even my father knows about them and was hyped to get stuff for my car when I first got it but I went the MP way on the parts. After looking into their website and contacting them I was informed that there is indeed a kit available which boosts 136hp to 170hp and the torque from 220NM to 270NM which seems considerable to me. They provide 2 year warranty as standard starting from the vehicles registration date and 3 years optional starting again with the vehicles first registration date. They give full covarage on the engine, transmission. If something were to happen they would directly pay to my dealer. However I also have 1 year of BMW warranty and I was looking into a extended one which means another additional 3 years. I talked to my service guy which is also the shop foreman who is a good sport. He told me that they would ignore the kit and still count stuff as under warranty, however, if I have to open the ECU's or etc there could be a problem especially with other dealers and services because it can be seen and sometimes can create a fault code. In which case if I had to take the vehicle to another dealer or service they may see and deny me warranty. He also said he can help me install it for free at the service which is awesome. AC Schnitzer told me that this tune is rather a kit with plug n play style installation on the engine bay and nothing is touched on the original BMW units. It would be installed near the windscreen were the battery charge points are under that cover. I told this to the guy and he said to bring all the emails etc tomorrow to him as I'm going to service for my z3 and we will check together. Now, what is your opinion on this? Should I go for it or wait? Also any tips and tricks are welcomed as this is my first tuning. I'm not looking for ultimate performance however a slight boost is necessary in my opinion especially in torque wise... |

i'd buy a faster car to start off with and save your money.
Your still under 200hp even if you spend $5k. The AC tune is no different than a Dinan tune, or JB4. Its a piggyback, and will void warranty in most cases.

See my engine is 1.5lt due to the fact the taxation system works here, bigger the cm3 higher the tax with stupidly fast rates. I paid %18 VAT %45 special consumption tax (ÖTV in turkish) and another %18 VAT for that ÖTV for my car with just a 1.5lt. If I had went for a say 220i which is about 180-190hp with a 2.0lt I would have to pay %110 ÖTV besides the VAT's and if I wanted a more powerful engine I had to place a special order since they are not imported here due to taxation reasons and the price in general with no gurantee of the delivery date at all. We also pay yearly taxes for the vehicles, with my car I have to pay 997 TRY tax in total a year, if I had went for a 220i I would have to pay 2770 TRY a year. Also bear in mind that the prices rise on BMW side with the engines getting more powerful. With this math in mind I saw nothing so significant to justify the difference of power between these two not mentioning the even more powerful engines. Just to give you an idea, I could have purchased the M2 in Germany and still have about 10-11k € on my hand with the price I paid for my 218i here. So squizeing more hp and torque out of the engine is the only option and people here do it all the time no matter which brand. I just want to get it done by professionals with perfect background as I cannot trust anyone here to do the job however I also observed no one is having any issues with the tunes that are done here but still, better safe than sorry.
I know it will void the warranty on some perspective especially if I take the car to another service but this is purely pros and cons case. There are risks but are they worth taking to gain what I want. I'm taking your opinions on this Last edited by omera60; 08-24-2017 at 10:15 AM.. |

Noone wants to hear that they should look at getting a new car. At that additional cost though you might want to do a cost analysis on trading in for a 228 or something else. Not familiar with that engine, but you'd be much better off with a simple plug and play like the dinan sport or jb+ if something like that exist. $300 bucks and you could install yourself in 5 minutes. |

Try contacting Burger tuning.. http://www.burgertuning.com/MINI_B38_B48_JB4.html
They have a tune for the B38, but it's for a Mini. It might work, may not work.. give them a buzz!

Go for a flash tune. I've heard there are many reputable flash tuning shops in Turkey, so you should be good to go.
As for warranty (this is specific to the MEVD 17.2.3 in the 218i), the flashed software can be hidden from diagnostic scanners so it does not trip the systems when it is hooked up on BMW's scanners and you don't get flagged. Contact kemiksiz, his 318i is flash tuned and he's from Turkey too and should be able to help you. |

So after doing some risk calculations and talking to professionals/specialists I have decided to wait for my warranty to end before I do anything else to the car. This way I feel more secured. Thank you guys for your suggestions, I will keep them in mind when the time comes...

After some going around, talking to my service partner who is cool with such mods, this seems to be the best way. The only issue is I need to have the flash on my hand as my car gets software updates for i-level on regular intervals, as you know during such operation everything goes default and tbh I don’t want to pay everything to get the flash again. After some through searching I found a company called TMC Motorsport. They are located on Northern Ireland and offer a tune for my car. From what I’ve seen they send you a OBD adapter which contains the flash, you hook it up, wait unplug it, leave the car and voila. I emailed them to get some information out with specific question, after that I’ll talk to my service partner about it and then make a certain decision. What are your opinion on them, has anyone tried their products in recent time? I also heard a company called Spider, does anyone know/recommend them? If you can also recommend any other company with this type solution I’d be really happy...
