CEL with JB4

Hey Guys,

Installed a catless dp on the weekend. Been driving nicely, today had some issues however. I had a drivetrain malfunction pop up, turned the car off then on again (help desk lvl 1) and bam problem solved..

Is this purely the jb4 doing its thing or is this normal or.....

Further, I had my jb4 drop the earth connection mid driving (after the above pop up). This caused Armageddon to occur. I think I seen Bruce Willis flash in front of me ever so briefly. Of course I had a million faults pop up which I can clear with torque pro. Im wondering would the JB4 dropping cause any problems besides the immediate loss of everything engine related and I come to a complete stop? Should I be worried about anything further?

However, once I connected the wire and cleared the faults it seems alright.

Cheers in advance.

Hey.

I cleared them using the torque pro. I should have screen shotted them.

Things like waste gate, o2 sensor, fuel rail. From what i recall was things related to where the JB4 connects into.

I keep getting drive train malfunctions again today. Restarting the car solves the problem. Its like 40 degrees here tho at the moment, so maybe due to heat.?

JB4 logs would help in diagnosing the issue.

Update:

So haven't received any more fault codes since the JB4 disconnected.

However the drive train malfunction again came up tonight, we can rule out heat as today dropped to a cool 20c so it cant be that. Weird thing is i didnt restart the car like i normally to do to clear the code. I open torque pro and no faults were found......

I dont have the USB cable to the JB4 so thats not a possible to grab the logs from there. I have also noticed a really faint nose coming from the engine bay when your off the gas since installing the DP, the noise seemingly goes away when im almost full lock with the wheels :s

I would take it back to the dealer but now I have a dp so that kinda out of the question.. Could I have stuffed the dp install somehow?

Stupid question maybe, but do you have a JB4 with a Bluetooth module? Otherwise you could download and install the JB4 app on your phone/tablet and create logs via the app.

As for the DP noise, maybe it's light burbling you would normally only get in sports? Since my DP was installed I can hear it very faintly burbling when my foot is off the pedal even in comfort. The noise would be coming from the exhaust then.

I'm not sure what's causing the drivetrain malfunction and it's going to be very hard to determine unless you pull some more information from your car. You really want to read out the error codes when the message pops up. It usually goes a long way in determining what's wrong.

If the downpipe is catless, it could throw a CEL, but I doubt the "catless downpipe detected" code would actually throw a drivetrain malfunction error your way as well.

I am sorry, but all of this is pretty much speculation until we get some error codes or logs

you start by saying you have not received any codes since removing the Jb4 then you say you got drivetrain malfunction ... Get a code reader and check codes

Update:

So I wasnt able to get logs sorted from the jb so I have pulled the JB4 off the car as well as the CAI. I have a dp which ill be removing from the car as well but for the time being Im getting these codes through torque pro. I realize the Cat code is from the DP but the others im concerned about. Im getting drive train malfunction 100% of the time last few days.

Current Fault Log
------------------
P007D: Unknown code - More information may be available on the web

Pending Fault Log
------------------
P00BD: Unknown code - More information may be available on the web
P0113: Intake Air Temperature Circuit High Input
P0238: Turbo/Super Charger Boost Sensor "A" Circuit High
P0420: Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)

Some quick googling of the circuit related one. States "A short to a power source in the sensor circuit can cause the ECM to get internally burned out if the circuit short goes over 5 volts"

So My JB4 disconnected the other day because the earth and power connections some how touched in the engine bay, it was a super hot day and it seems the wires melted :s. Could this have caused the JB4 to short the sensors?

Looks like they are all related to improper intake install or busted charge pipe.

^ this, check your chargepipe for cracks and stuff and put the stock intake back on and see if that fixes it

Circuit high means theres an open in the circuit which could be a severed wire or the shit just dont work anymore

yea I agreed.

I think when my jb unit crossed wires it may have shorted out sensors it's plugged into.

update: taken the car into BMW, at the time only the below Fault code was present.

P0238: Turbo/Super Charger Boost Sensor "A" Circuit High & a powertrain fault, the others had cleared.

BMW have sent away for a new Boost sensor.

I explained that I did initially clear the codes in order to get the car running so I could drive home, they explained that and ODB app like torgque pro is enough to void warranty should they need to send something the Germany....... However in my case they are covering it.

Your dealership lied to you lol, typical bmw scaring tactics!
Find another mod friendly dealer and maybe jb4 is not meant for you
