Manual for me. I drive a lot for work. I prefer the MT. My current 335i coupe is AT and I find my self getting highway hypnosis. I don't feel engaged. I have had 540i MT and 545i MT then I settled when I leased my 335i. I can't wait for my 235! Should be late Sept.

Well, I live in Los Angeles AND have a bad knee. Pogo-ing up/down on that left leg for 2 hours is no fun. Of course the aforementioned acceleration and mpg benefits are also great in the A/T.

There are times when I'm really driving. Hitting a corner hard, searching out the apex, nailing the throttle, etc. There are other times when I'm just traveling. Putting through a parking lot with 1 hand on the wheel and the other holding a coffee while chatting on the phone via bluetooth.

With the A/T, I can travel if I want to. Sit in traffic while holding my wife's hand and chill. That option is unavailable on a M/T. When I really want to drive, I like that in the A/T I can tilt the shifter into manual and jump on the paddles for a much more engaging experience. Plus, there's something very satisfying when the hammer is down and you just flick that paddle and feel that lightning "thunk" of the next gear. This A/T is fantastic. Way faster than I was ever able to shift a M/T.

When I was younger, I drove everywhere. Every trip to the store was an imagined autocross event. M/T was the only way to go. Not so anymore. I guess if my M235i was a weekender, a M/T would have been the more engaging/fun/sporty option. But I feel that the A/T has better practicality for me as a DD and lets me choose whether I'm Dr Jekyl or Mr. Hyde when I'm driving.

I own M235i for over 3 months and the manual gearbox started grinding when executing relatively quick first - second shifts (Mind you: not abusive or even hard shifts, just moderately quick in a straight line). This worries me because based on various forums BMWs, even M-models, have fragile and underengineered gearboxes compared to heavy, yet robust Borg Vagners or Tremecs they put in American muscle.

6MT here as well.
I enjoy driving the car, my previous car was a 2011 E90 335i xDrive w/ 6MT as well.
One thing that is bothersome - the hill assist is more intrusive than in the E90.

6MT because,

1. More engaging
2. More fun
3. I'm a snobby elitist
4. "automatics suck"

It'll be interesting to see how I enjoy manual when my car gets here. I've driven a few manuals car, but never owned one... Kinda like when people like snow it's fun for vacation but sucks to live with it. Hope this isn't the same case.

I got an automatic for 4 reasons:

1. My left knee is giving out
2. The car is quicker than the manual
3. My car came that way
4. My wife can drive the car (but so far, hasn't)

I got a manual for four reasons.

1. Slightly less weight
2. Less mechanical complexity
3. Easier for doing reverse 180's
4. My GF can't drive manual (and she's asking to learn)

228i driver here. My reasons for getting a manual:

1) I've driven manual cars for 15 years
2) makes my short city commute much more entertaining (even with some stop-and-go traffic)
3) excellent defense against distracted driving
4) offers more engagement with the car
5) and most important: I don't want to give BMW an excuse to stop making them!

6MT - Been driving a manual for 12 years now and won't go back to an auto by choice. At such a point in time that we all drive electric cars that don't actually have transmissions, I will reluctantly go without. Until then, I'm thoroughly enjoying my 228 6MT and look forward to a M2 6-speed being my next car in about 4 years.

i test driven auto transmission and was totally sold. this transmission is not just your typical auto tran, it's an excellent one, almost as fast as DC is. plus you get a much better gas/mileage on a long road (i was able to do 42mpg driving 70mph).
