Basic Coding - Voids Warranty?
I just had my 2er coded for some simple stuff like being able to roll up windows from fob, fold mirrors from CA/FOB, disable seat belt warning, remove disclaimers, changed boot up screen in I-drive to //M, changed gong sounds to I3/I8, enabled VLD.
I'm almost due for an oil change. Should I be worried about my warranty? How I understand it is that I just changed the parameters that already existed on the car but I am still worried the dealership will try to make a deal out of this. Should I code it back to stock prior to going to the dealership? (I don't want to if it is not necessary) What do you guys think? Last edited by artztt; 07-24-2015 at 07:55 PM.. |

You're worried about nothing.
As long as you don't make any coding changes that damage your vehicle or cause problems, you're fine. OTOH, if you brick the electronics, you won't be covered. |

I had my car coded for 3 years and never had an issue at the dealer, even when they had to install software updates.

The coding options are all built into the car and specified based on regional markets. So no voiding. In fact, the only thing I'm worried about is dealership needing to reset iDrive in the future whatever reason, which would erase all the coding...

Thanks for all the replies. The dealer would need to tell the customer if they are going to reset the software that would cause the coding to be reset?
What would be the terminology for such reset? How often do they do this? Do you specifically tell the dealer not to do this reset. Wouldn't that just raise a red flag? Last edited by artztt; 07-24-2015 at 11:50 PM.. |

BMW does release updates from time to time and the dealer is required to keep the cars software up to date as it's part of the cars function. While it's under BMW's warranty the updates are to keep the car running as they design/ed it. Warranty is a legal contract that BMW and the customer need to abide by in order to keep the warranty in force both for the customer and for BMW's obligations under the warranty. I wouldn't worry about the coding other than it could get erased. It's not something they regularly check on an individual basis, just to keep the software up to date. The software version is checked every time you take your car in for service. It's required per BMW, again, to keep things up to date. |
