Love the posts by people driving petrol cars making statements about diesel engines losing sales to justify the loss they have incurred because their petrol cars have lost their value.

It is a known fact that the public's perception is that diesel although giving out particulates (being addressed by the way) is still the way they want to go. Even the resale value holds up.

It is the small petrol cars (around 1 litre) driven by youngsters and by granny that is keeping that part of the market going.

The day the large lorries move from Diesel to Petrol that is when things will change. I do not see that happening in the near future, no matter that George Osborne has changed the tax rules from 2017 onwards.

An Electric 5 series, please no.

Bout as much use as tits on a fish.

The 5 is a mileage muncher / load lugger, especially in the Estate version.

I don't fancy carting full car 1000 miles on just electric, especially when heading in to North Scotland.

Diesel is having a hiccup in the UK, I can see towns / cities banning cars with x emissions etc.

At the moment buying petrol would be more sensible.

I don't think any BMW is holding its price tbh, the 3 series is that common it's almost in free fall with residuals.

You can say that again. I live in UK BMW land near Oxford where many work in the factory and just about everyman and his dog have a 320d. Oxford BMW have loads of them sitting out on the forecourt, some at really silly prices. Mind you they (BMW) are controlling everything by having really good personal finance on the 3 series.

The one car that does hold its value well is the X3 in particular the X3 xDrive20d because there is such a shortage of them and a long lead time to get one made.

How about instead of a 4-turbo, diesel nightmare past 30,000 miles, they learn to trim the fat, without pricing through the stratosphere... *cough*

I'm waiting for the day when BMW develops an engine that has more turbochargers than it does cylinders.

You need to get into this millenia...
I drive a Tesla and it outruns every BMW I've owned. And althoigh I don't have the newest version, that version outruns every BMW M car.
Go yesy drive one and then speak.

Why not? I've had no problem driving the same places with my electric car as I did with my previous 5-series touring and the 5-series touring before that and the 3-series touring before that.

I'm not saying it should only be electric. I'm fine with 20 (or more) different gas and diesel versions as long as there is at least one that's only electric with good range.

You need a very good infrastructure in place firstly.

A petrol / diesel car can be curled in a few minutes.

An electric car cannot.

This means garage forecourts need large foot prints, that's not going happen in London etc.

So then you have to put electric charging areas elsewhere.

Where though? How many.

Over here after 6 / 8 pm majority of shopping areas are closed and locked up.

The more weight you put in the car means more power drain, so driving from London to Scottish Highlands, family of 4 and bikes on roof - will be a logistical nightmare.

What will the range of an electric 5 series in those conditions?

Personally, it's a bit of smoke and mirrors by BMW to appease the new EU emissions law / fines coming in.

Here's an option.
That's 500 million for probably a 5 mile stretch of motorway.

Imagine the cost of say doing the M1 or M40, not to mention say 2 years of road works.

Luckily we won't need many power stations to provide the extra electricity, thus not adding extra fossil fuel energy in to the mix.

I agree, this is something that tax payers should not have to dish out extra for. The road tax should cover it flat out. Of course, that's where the increase in road tax starting in 2017 might come into play.

Anything is pretty much possible at a price.

An individual company should not be financed from tax payers cash (road or income).

Read a few interesting bits on the crime side of things with electric cars, while the car is not desirable, it's metals are.

Interestingly, my road tax will drop dramatically in 2017, as the Mustang 5.0 V8 drops to £140 a year , happy days

Are you sure about that?

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-33447106

From the above link.......

Mr Osborne said: "There will be no change to VED for existing cars - no one will pay more in tax than they do today for the car they already own.

I read that as the VED will stay the same as he puts it up to in 2016. So if he does not put it up, you will be paying what you do now. Mine will still be £180. I have just paid that for 1st September 2015 to 31st August 2016.

All a bit confusing when you read other reports/links.

Yep totally positive, purchase new Mustang after the new VED comes out, tax is £140 a year and you don't pay the £310 additional you have to for a BMW.

Admittedly there is that first year but, however that's not much.

A fully pimped up I3 or an I8 is £310 a year VED versus £140 for 5.0 V8

Great ain't it

Ahhh....A misunderstanding! You say above
Quote:
my road tax.
Do you have Mustang 5.0 V8 now or going to have one prior to 1st April 2017?

http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/car-new...r-tax-overhaul

Quote:
New VED road tax bands from April 2017

The new VED rates affect cars registered from 1 April 2017. The first year rates will continue to be set according to CO2 emissions although only zero-emission cars will be exempt from paying.

After the first year, a flat standard rate of £140 a year applies – although zero-emission vehicles continue to be free. Cars with a list price above £40,000 will attract a supplement of £310 on their standard charge for the first five years.

All cars that were first registered before the new system comes into effect remain on the existing VED scale which will not change.
The rates for a Ford Mustang 5.0 V8 registered after April 2010 and before 1st April 2017 that emits 299g/km of CO2 are £1100 per annum, see......

https://www.gov.uk/government/upload...al_version.pdf

VED tax bands: April 2017 onwards:

http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/car-new...r-tax-overhaul

table
VED car tax bands for cars first registered from 2017 onwards
Emissions (g/km of CO2) First year rate Standard rate
0 £0 £0
1-50 £10 £140
51-75 £25
76-90 £100
91-100 £120
101-110 £140
111-130 £160
131-150 £200
151-170 £500
171-190 £800
191-225 £1,200
226-255 £1,700
Over 255 £2,000

Cars above £40,000 pay £310 annual supplement for five years
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
So a new Mustang 5.0 V8 (299g/km of CO2) is over 255 and will cost £2000 in its first year. After that £140 per annum. It does not get the £310 supplement because it costs less than £40,000.

I am not being picky or argumentative, I am just trying to get my head round what George Osborne is doing or trying to do and how different reporters are well...reporting it.
