You own a sports car and you don't have it on sports mode most of the time.

Sport mode is allot more fun and sounds better but around town it is just too jerky in sport mode. The ride us much nicer in comfort mode. Be nice to live where the roads are all curvy and no traffic and you could have fun driving to work.

We have a lot slower traffic as we hardly have any freeways and haven't found any of our BMW's jerky. I have found Sports Mode better as I can keep up with the traffic rather than being left behind. Give it a go for a couple of weeks.

I just did a trip to Munich to pick up a friend from the airport. Averaged 30.2 cruising over 110mph most of the time or faster. Too bad it tops out at 130.

No...its Jerky because you are constantly stopping and starting at lights and stop signs. Really not useful to be in sport mode in those driving conditions.

I prefer the car in sports around lights and stops. I don't like the "lag" from the accellerator when taking off.

As I suspected even before the swap from my 528xi (N20 engine) to my current M235i, the average MPG I'm getting now is lower, in spite of the engine being 50% larger and performance (which I take advantage of fully) almost 30% higher.
Yes - one obvious reason is the M235i is a lighter vehicle than the F10, but not by a great margin. The real reason is that the power/torque margin the N55 offers makes it possible for the engine to "travel light" most of the time, while the N20 in the F10 body is labouring near its limits almost constantly. Therefore not only is the economy similar, but - provided nothing unexpected like a catastrophic failure) happens - I'm expecting my M235i to last much longer with a healthy engine than my F10 would (and I bought it to keep for as long as possible this time),

Is the mpg readout unreliable initially? Or does x-drive get significantly worse gas mileage than RWD?
I test drove 2 different x-drive 228 convertibles, and both were reading about 15-16 mpg. |

The initial lag is there no matter what (even if you heard from your BMW dealer it "has been eliminated with the latest software update). But knowing and accepting this simple fact you should know it will only occur if you press the gas pedal to the floor in the fastest possible way - why would you do it in the normal city driving?! Do it a little slower and there will be NO lag whatsoever - believe me on that. And once you know how to avoid those (dreadful sometimes) couple of seconds waiting for your engine to react - there is no reason whatsoever to always drive in the city in Sport mode... So the other people's responses and advise has been 100% correct: for city driving, Comfort mode is the best as you avoid unnecessary shirting jerkiness and higher engine revving in a situation that doesn't require them at all. Not to even mention your MPG Unless of course you're one of those BMW owners/drivers who use every traffic light to prove their cars have better acceleration to all the other drivers around you...

Its not turbo lag at all. It throttle delay. It not at all uncommon to accelerate quickly in the city, say turning left across an intersection and you're trying to clear that intersection. Between the throttle mapping and the tendancy for the car to never drop into first, you can have slow take offs. I don't notice the jerkiness in sport because I'm not jabbing at the throttle. I prefer that mapping. I'm not drag racing. On the highway I often put the car into comfort there. |

As I said in my post, I meant no offense - if you feel offended though, I apologize. Please also take into consideration English is not my native language, so some subtleties may have been confused. But calling my post "mean spirited" is a bit of exaggeration on your side - even if I failed communicating my thoughts in a friendly manner which was my intention
And please believe me I know the throttle lag you are talking about - I came across it with my F10 528xi 2.5 years ago and just couldn't believe my ears when the BMW dealer said "it's normal". I remember several times I was nearly crashed to pieces by an approaching truck when I wanted to merge the lane before it, and pressed the gas pedal to the floor instantaneously - the car just stood there for what felt like several seconds before the engine finally revved up and I pulled away! So I learnt my lesson in a hard way; even if in extreme hurry (like when you want to avoid collision with another car) - floor it, just a bit slower. Works like charm, and those moments of fear are long gone and forgotten. Just wanted to share it with you...

Sport mode on country roads and in agile city driving... Comfort as regular highway mode ... Eco pro for long distance cruising - the latter I have not tried though ...
Road conditions in the Midwest make sport chassis on highways very uncomfortable...

I'm currently at 10.3 L/100km (22.8mpg) overall after 14,100km and probably 80/20 suburban/highway driving. I mostly drive comfort during winter and DSC off during summer. Did a recent 150km trip through the country side where I got 6.6 L/100km (35.6 mpg).

Average of 27 mpg over 5500 miles, with about 50% highway, 30% suburban back roads, 20% city. I use sport mode ~20% of the time. This has been mostly in warm weather, so I expect it to decrease slightly in the winter months. M235i xdrive

you guys reporting what the trip computer shows or doing the milage divided by gallons pumped thing ? Reason for asking trip computer on my 228 typically shows 23-23.5 mpg (and yes, i reset trip computer each time I fill up) however dividing miles traveled by gallons pumped shows 25-25.5 mpg. Is the trip computer that inaccurate ?
