I can understand the point of selling a car spec'd with MPerf goodies from the get-go.

But what I don't understand is the point in making it a limited edition car when it basically is no different than any other M240i with these parts fitted later or at the port. Not even a dumb limited edition badge or anything for badge whores.

Even though part of me feels like they are over-diluting the brand with all these minor variations, I am also impressed at how effective they have been at parsing out separate preferences. At this point I'm pretty sure that there is a BMW for most everyone, but not the same one. For every person who felt like the M2 was finally 'it' there are others who feel the same way about the 240, 228, or 335. Even the packages impart a lot of difference - I was surprised how much difference there was when I did one of those 'drive for the cause' events - I'd assumed that a 335 was about like a 235, but WAY different (and at the end of that day, I wouldn't have traded my 228ix for any of them - reassuring to me, but probably not the effect they were looking for as they desperately tried to interest me in the 5 and 7 series). I'll refrain from arguing back at the other poster's enthusiastic bashing of anyone who disagrees - one aspect of human nature that we can't evolve out of soon enough for my taste.

How in hell is this a "performance" edition if it has less grip than the 14 year old edition?

And no power bump. That's lame, sorry to say.
Simple .. It's called " progress."

ZHP= Performance Package.

M performance = Package

No LSD so all parlour tricks, and guaranteed to cost more than an M2. You'd need to be really strange to buy one of these. I know that's mean but that's my opinion.

Isn't M240i already M-performance

M240i is by definition an M-performance model. So what is this double M-performance? Sorry this one is a nonsensical attempt by BMW to split the segments more than they need to.

They should have offered that LSD standard.
Anyhow, it may cost less than if you'd buy all the accessories separately.

The M2 is "unlimited" yet hard to find. This is "limited" but shouldn't be too hard to find.

An adman's dream.

I can see how a 228i (especially with base suspension) is different enough from a M2 in both price and comfort where many 228i buyers might think the M2 it too hardcore for daily use. My issue is more with this "M240i M Performance Edition."

I'm sure it's a blast to drive, but I just don't see how this could appeal to someone and not the M2. If both were readily available, sitting next to each other on a dealer lot with the same sticker, who's going to say, "I'll take the M240I M Performance Edition because the M2 is too performance orientated?" Sounds funny doesn't it.

Stick a carbon decklid and mirrorcaps on a 228i and call it day at that point.

I mean in all fairness this thing has more M's then an entire Costco sized bag of M&Ms.

It's a little /MMMuch.

I fail to see how someone who wanted more of a "sleeper" would get the whoriest badgiest car ever created by BMW - unless they debadged it (a debadged one of these is hilarious in its own right!).

For almost about the same price, you can just get a M2

There's also a limited edition M2 Performance Edition. Pretty similar to what they've done here; no increase in power but a bunch of accessories, with a $10k premium.

What?

The LSD is the only M Performance part that actually addresses "Performance"

I have one of the Canadian 50 "limited" run Performance Edition 235 models. I got it last March, after hunting all winter, for about the same (if not 2-3k less) as I would have paid for a same equivalent spec'd CPO car (minus M parts). Paid $49k w/ 15k kms, CPO until 2021 and basically got the M Performance parts for free, also, the M-perf LSD. Was selling for 5-8K under what others have been sold for since. This car MSRP'd for $59,900cdn (about $67k all in to the first owner), no M2 available at the time, and didn't care to jump on the bandwagon paying over MSRP and waiting for 6-12 months. I figured for a one year old car, the price/kms/features only made sense. I don't mind sinking about $10k into it to get it where I want it to be, which would be equal to/ slightly higher performance, than a stock M2. If I bought an M2, I would have waited about a year, and still would have the mod bug, so this car what the perfect recipe for what I had planned. There's no sense in paying for things I would replace anyway in the long run, like brakes, suspension, engine bolt-ons, etc. All I would have done, by buying an M2, is increased my total costs. But, I could say I have an M2!!!!!

There's something special (sometimes) about owning a limited run of OEM equipped cars. When I sell it, I feel I'll hit home with a buyer who appreciates its uniqueness. For me, it's the first car I've purchased (first BMW for that matter) that I literally have to do nothing to the exterior to make it the way I'd like (wheels included). If I bought a factory M235i at the time, same options, I'd have paid about $5-7k more delivered, would get tanked on depreciation, and would still have to purchase the $5k worth of M Performance add ons. In this case, to me, it made sense.

THAT SAID, I would not have paid $59,900+tax for this car. Better yet, I wouldn't pay MSRP on a brand new M2, either. There's enough performance in these cars to keep things interesting for years to come. Not many of us on these boards can run the m235i to it's absolute performance limits, let alone the M owners who brag more than they drag. So it's really a want, vs need, in this case. When I saw the m235i for the first time, I knew it was going to be a special car. It's been no exception. I would not sell this car to buy an M2, but I would for a 911..

My $.02 on this subjective topic.

They could have easily called the performance edition the base M340i car with the LSD factory installed and made all the cosmetic stuff an option for those of us who like performance but don't like standing out too much in a crowd

Factory installed LSD vs dealer installed

I heard, from a reliable source, that the BMW engineering department is seriously discussing adding another M. Question is, can they really fit another one in?

Hopefully the numbers are not too embarrassing compared to the new Civic Type R at the Nurburgring track which came in ah around 7:43 seconds for the Type R.. Where are the numbers BMW?

it does seem kind of ridiculous to offer this car in only one color and with a limited number of units, especially because as others have pointed out, you can add all of these parts individually. I have an m235i with many of these performance parts already on it as well as some this car doesn't include, so in a sense I created an m performance m235 before BMW did. Lol. I'm sure there are others out there who have done the same. If BMW offers this car with all of these m performance goodies on it at a cheaper price than if you added them each separately then the special edition version makes some kind of sense in that respect.
