$'s are only part of the choice. There is the suspension difference, no 6mt option and the feel of a RWD is different as well.

Is more traction bad?

Cost aside, why would more traction make for worse handling? Faster, more stable. Recipe for the Nissan GTR.

Because the front suspension is DIFFERENT and raised about 10mm not to mention the increased weight over the front. m235 already turns in less sharp than a 228. Sure, absolute grip is more (hence likely faster 0-60 launches as well), but transitions are less sharp as well.

Have we actually confirmed that the suspension is different? Everything i have been told / read is that it is identical to the RWD version for the m235i.

No - not confirmed. But it is different (slightly) for every other xdrive car vs. its cousin, so no reason to assume it would not be. My dealer certainly thinks so and my previous experience with a 335xi coupe was NOT positive between the front suspension and the run flat tires it came with. Fixed it of course, but I won't make that mistake again.

All i can go by right now is that the order guide for the m235i / xi shows the same suspension setup and also the raised high speed limiter (with perf tires).

For the 335i/435i order guide it shows that the x-drive versions don't get the m suspension or higher limiter.

Guess we will see!

Well, look at it this way: it WILL add weight, and up front as well. And, for $1800, you can get a nice set of real winter tires and rims that will certainly be better in inclement weather than performance tires and AWD. Forget all season tires - you give up too much in both the summer and winter.

MEH....

Xdrive may not win every C&D or Motor Trend comparo vs Quattro...In my real world testing? In the upper Midwest snow belt over the last 10+ years???

I've owned X5, X6, X3 and my kid drove a 325xi and my wife drives an E70 X5 35i with Xdrive now...

I'll tell you unequivocally Xdrive with snow tires is a beast in the Winter..

Anyone who drives performance tires in cold weather is looking to suffer the fate of Darwinism..

I'm not a huge fan of all season tires, but with Xdrive they do an ok job..Certainly not winter rubber well - but my all seasons got me through two rough winters so far with Xdrive.

I knew I wasn't going to keep this X3 any longer than I had to - so never sprung for a winter set-up and stuck to the all seasons.

Ideally (for me) its Xdrive with a dedicated performance vs winter set of rubber/wheels..

Many of us in the upper snow belt are willing to make some of the balance, weight trade-offs for better stability over the 5 months of winter..

Again I'll say - glad bmw is giving people choices..

They're also smart- I'll bet 40% + of their biz up here is going to be Xdrive on the 2'er..Thats probably business they'd never have gotten with just RWD..

I've had both AWD and RWD cars and still do ... my M235i is RWD, and its fantastic.
One thing about AWD cars, you get a little bit of a power robbing by the Front wheels, and the car always feels heavier on the steering.

Wow, can't some of you people (and not just you btw) do some research before posting erroneous info? The suspension is NOT raised 10mm over the RWD version. It's the same. And the xDrive has been specifically tuned to MPerformance specs like the rest of the MPerformance vehicles available in Europe that come with xDrive. I've posted this info months ago FYI.

Your research/ info is correct. Bottom line difference between the 2 cars will be as most have stated; fun factor. The 2wd will excel in it.....when it's dry and nice out if you're a 7/10's driver or greater. If the only vehicle you've ever pushed is the shopping cart in your local Walmart, then there won't be any difference at all under most circumstances.

I think a lot of the confusion (?) mis-information is a carry over from previous generation xi offerings...

Love your sig btw...I miss my e92 M3 everyday Like yourself, I've got M235 or M2 on my next car list...Less than one year to go in the X3!!

Shopping Cart

I don't know about pushing a shopping cart, but 0 to 60 in 4.4 seconds sounds like fun to me. I've not seen any reviews on the m235i xdrive, so I'm not sure what research you are referring to.

I'd skip the x drive if you can.

The trade offs are not worth it if you are willing to get some winter tires.

My e46 330 RWD, with winter tires has been great in the winter. I've even driven through >12" of unplowed fresh snow without getting stuck. If fact I've never been stuck.

You'll have to go to European reviews, comparos and specs for the M135i for the answers. You'll also want to take a look at BMW's web literature on the M-Performance cars lineup and what differentiates them from regular production vs true ///M division vehicles.

I'm waiting patiently for proper track reviews of the M235 xDrive (vs those already published overseas for the M135) because the driving dynamics - car for car- are said to be slightly different in favour of the M235 's body configuration ie coupe vs hatchback. What I'd love to see are 1) a side by side of the M235 vs M235 xDrive and then 2) a comparo between these BMW's along with their AWD performance competitors from Mercedes, Audi and VW. This would be telling and probably help a bunch of the undecided come to an informed decision IMO.

Absolutely true on both points lol. It's hard to talk about X and M vehicles in the same sentence. Just a matter of time and things will be back to normal though!!

To me and it's just my opinion, there is no point to get a BMW that is not a RWD. If you want an AWD, you better go with other makers such as Audi or Subie. That's why I have a BMW to go anywhere without snow and an Audi if I ever want to see snow.

Unless you track, get the AWD if you don't mind paying for the extra cost.

Your average drivers will never know the difference between AWD or RWD and the AWD adds additional safety for adverse weather. Additionally, 99% of people driving cars will never be able to exploit the full potential of a M225 let alone a M235.
