Looking to update steering software OG M2

Just picked up my 17 OG yesterday. Yikes, the EPS steering is a weak link for sure. Very articial and a bit rubbery compared to my other cars.

I've been searching threads, I found this protool one but I don't have Android. Is there an app for iPhone? I wish Bimmercode tuned EPS that would be simple

What is the best EPS software tune and the easiest DIY to update? Thank you

I had an istep update done at the dealer to 2021 software a few years ago, which included a new OG EPS profile from what I understand. That helped some. Recently I had the EPS setting modified to use the M2CS profile that’s included. I don’t recommend that profile as it’s very twitchy (and exhausting), and not really helpful. I’d recommend sticking with the OG profile. I haven’t felt the steering get any better with alignment or tire changes as I’ve seen with my e92. From what I’ve been told, M2 steering is inherently compromised due to EPS/weight/geometry/tire size, so I’d set your expectations low.

FWIW I’ve read that relying on steering feel to assess grip isn’t necessarily the best approach (although I do enjoy the awesome feedback on my 328): https://speedsecrets.com/q-how-can-i...y-cars-limits/

And here’s an article talking about how the suspension geometry (and size of the EPS motor) are likely the limiting factors (including an m2 callout): https://www.roadandtrack.com/car-cul...ring-explainer

That is a very interesting comment in R&T article about the M2 having a larger EPS motor to have quicker steering response, vs. the GT350. Albeit at the expense of some feel. Overall, I like that tradeoff.

Easy button is just paying kubax86 aka Bimmer-remote.com otherwise get a cheap android device from Walmart or Amazon and get Protool.

Get full screen CarPlay while you’re in there.

imo it would be better to get protool, because you can experiment with the different settings and pick something you like. If you get someone to code it for you then you're locked in after they're done - whether you like it or not.

I recently just went to the dealer and paid $300 for a full istep update on every module because I figured they are working in unison together. Not only was steering, transmission behavior, and throttle much better in all modes, it even made self coding a lot easier as I was able to even do carplay full screen and ID6 skin myself with bimmercode thereafter.

you can take it to the dealer and have them check the vin if there is an update. I bought MY17 in 2023 from the original owner at 11k miles so it was obvious an update was never applied.

I went from Istep version F020-16-11-502 (original) to F020-23-07-530 (latest)

You typically need updates if the settings you want to code aren't present. Since your car is a 2018 MY, you likely have 2017 or newer software on it and likely have all the coding settings already in the car (since the m2 was nearly complete around that time frame, since software planning and development happens way before a car is released). So it is likely you won't need an update.

Can you confirm Protool does full screen carplay?

If your ISTEP supports it then yes.

Full screen car play coding is just simply basic FDL coding, nothing special about it.

If I'm not mistaken though, you need to have a more recent iStep level in order to code in fullscreen carplay through Protool - wouldn't hurt to try it.

if you have protool, it lets you test whatever you want to code for free, the only time you pay is when you want to code the actual feature.

So technically you can download protool and browse the menus and see if it is there for free.
