I hadn't realized manufacturers were building cars that operate this way - I'll start keeping an eye out for that.

Given how many people aren't looking ahead at all times today, no brake lights on a stopped car would seem to increase the chances for rear-enders to occur.

I think those who can’t recognize a stream of traffic has been stopped for a while when they are approaching, would be the same people who would run into parked cars at the side of the road - better driving skills and attention needed.

I can see that it is more of a problem in the US and Canada compared with the UK due to poor driving test standards. When driving in North America I don’t keep my foot on the brake while waiting at traffic lights (when driving a manual, which all my cars are). If I’m the last person in a queue on the highway I won’t keep my foot on the brake if stopped, but will activate my hazard lights if a car approaching from behind is not slowing down appropriately.
