SmartTop for 240i vert?

Hi,

My 2015 m235i convertible's lease is almost up. I'm considering updating to a 2018 m240i convertible. Does anyone know if the SmartTop module on my 2015 will work in the 2018?

Thanks!

Ben.

Not sure, but can't you code the car to do these things? What does the smart top module do?

From what I remember, just open and close the top from the remote. You can already open and close the top while moving. Wouldn’t the people you bought the module from know?

The SmartTop module lets allows 1-touch up and down for the top.

Interesting, never heard of it before. My 16 M235 cabrio operates from the remote but you must hold the open or lock button until it finishes and it doesn't have much range, maybe 10'. Where does this module mount?

You piggyback it inline with the existing controller cable, which runs through the side panel at the back-seat passenger side. It involves pulling the bottom back seat cushion, which is not as difficult as it sounds. (The tricky part was threading the seat belts back through when replacing the cushion.)

I've had one on my 135i vert for 5 years now. It's many features are what BMW should have made standard. Some of the things I like are of course the one touch up and down, no more holding the dash button down and waiting for the top to go up, just press it once get out of the car and walk away. Another nice feature is you no longer have to be next to the car to raise or lower the top with the key fob. I can stand in the living room double click the key fob and the top and windows go up (or down) from 20 feet away. You can also disable the whole thing when you take the car in to the dealer, and the top will work as stock. As soon as the M235i is out of warranty I'm installing one on it too!

I thought about one when I had my Volvo C70. I was afraid of the warranty no matter what people said about it being invisible. One of the advantages on the c70 was being able to put the down or up while moving. Of course now I can do that anyway. It would be nice to be able to put the top up away from the car.

To close the loop: Mod4Cars confirms that the unit will work on the 2018 m240i (and all F23 models.)

For those concerned about warranty: It really is invisible. You can completely turn it off with a special sequence on the turn indicator. Only someone who knows how it works could detect it's presence. And it's trivial to completely remove, other than needing to move the back seat bottom to get to it.

Personally, once BMW started allowing the top to move with the car in motion, I think this has become a safety feature. Having to hold the top button while maneuvering in a parking lot is distracting. One touch is _much_ safer.

I have an F23 m240i on order and definitely want SmartTop for the added convenience.

I'm also looking at getting BavSound Stage 1 speaker upgrades--they have an install video on youtube that walks you through taking out the back seat, and side cushion.

Mods4Cars also has instructions on removing the seat and side cushion. What I'd like to see is instructions on threading the seat belts back through on reinstall. I recall that being the hardest part of the job. No one talks about putting it all back together :-)

It should be possible to code but I have never achieved this. All my car will do is put the windows down on key. They won't go up and my mirrors won't fold in and out. I've tried with the assistance of the creator of BimmerCode app on iPhone to code it by following each setting he has asked me to change but it just won't have it! Has anyone done this?
