"Thrumming" vibration

As I am getting accustomed to my '16 228xi - coming from '13 128i - I am noticing a pulsing vibration in the steering wheel at highway speed. The vibration is pulsing about once per second, so not a steady vibration, but rather a brief vibration that pulses. I've never experienced anything like this in over 40 years of driving. Any thoughts?

How fast and have you hit any bumps? I had a small vibration from a slightly bent rim (wheels bend very easily).

Highway-speed vibration is often the result of wheel damage, uneven tire wear, unbalanced wheels, alignment issues or some combination thereof.

This!
Had the same issue since new, dealer still working on it as I of course have now (8k km)went through bumps and/or potholes, but never repaired it.
I switched to non-rf and balanced at 5k km and the vibration reduced 85%.

Maybe the wheel weights have fallen off. Check all your wheels for weights.

Thanks all. The car is brand new, less than 400 miles, and no bumps or anything. The described pulsing vibration has been there since the get go. Will be in touch with the dealer and update as new information comes in.

Do you feel the vibration on the floor or the console?

Also happens to my new 2015 228i Convertible. Brand new, no hits. Strange steering wheel vibration at 40˜45mph. Went to the dealer and they replaced all four runflat tires for new set of Pirellis P7. Said the tires had flat spots. They stated the car must have came from Germany with defective tires since they only kept the car for 19 days at the dealer before I leased it. Vibration is still there (very faint) but much less than before.
Will follow up with them.

No, just the steering wheel.

You could try to rotate the wheels front to back. If the vibration is not at the steering wheel anymore then it is a bent wheel or bad tire.

The other poster that had new tires installed by the dealer and still has vibration, if the car is stock then I would say that vibration is just not acceptable in a new BMW. My car is smooth as silk.

Check to be sure this isn't your car's Lane Keeping Assistant telling you you've drifted a ways out of your lane.

The on-off switch for this function lives just ahead of your left knee.

Don't have the land keeping assistant feature. Wheel swap a good idea to narrow it down. Any chance it's in the front differential - this is AWD?

I know this is an old thread but my newly acquired BMW AWD(2017) has the exact same thing described by others in this thread.

It has brand new tires, new back rotors, fronts look great, fairly low miles. Shop I took it to couldn't or didn't find anything but it's driving me nuts. Starts at 40 mph until about 55.

At a loss now.

Garage List
The first thing in these situations is to take it to have a full tracking check/adjustment at a specialist tyre outfit. By specialist I mean somewhere with a full Hunter setup and someone qualified to use it. Most every tyre outfit can do tracking, but only a minority have a Hunter (or equivalent) system - it's the latter you're after.

A full Hunter tracking check will either correct the issue, identify the cause, or at least eliminate that it's anything to do with tracking setup on the car. At my tyre independent, it's obvious that the tracking guy is one of the more mature guys in the shop: he clearly doesn't do grunt work fitting, but specialises in balancing and tracking and talking to customers about tyre choice etc.

At the same time, they can check the individual wheel balancing and things like the aforementioned balance weights coming off, bent rims, flat spots etc.

Like msej449, and if you haven't already, I suggest looking for a shop with a Hunter HawkEye Alignment rack and a Hunter Road Force Balancer. If you Google "hunter road force balance near me", you'll see those nearest you.

I would be curious as to if the "Pulsing Vibration" increase in rapidity as the vehicle increases in speed. Does it occur in any/all Driving Modes?

Thanks for the replies and the suggestions and the wheel place closest to me showed up after doing a search for the "Hunter" thing so will try them soon hopefully.

The pulsing starts at around 40 MPH to about 55 and think it may be a little worse in eco mode rather than sport mode but close and you can feel it in the steering wheel, seat, side arm rest.

It's also way worse on a less than perfect road compared to new pavement.
