1 series hitch fit a 2 series...what are the chances
Any ideas? I trade my car in this friday and wonder if it is worth ripping off the rear of it to remove the hitch or just leave it on. It is a big PITA so just wondering what the chances are that it might fit my 2 series that I take delivery of in 2 weeks

I would imagine given the change in Chassis, bumper overhangs, and possibly exhaust layout that the chances of it fitting are low, but it might be possible.
If you do find out anything please let us know. I spent a year waiting for the F30 hitch to be released so I could use my bike rack and I'd love to know if someone will release a similar option for the 2...roof racks are awful.

[QUOTE=Cyberdemon;...roof racks are awful.[/QUOTE]
Cyber, I am planning on using the BMW built in roof rack System on my 2series and 428. Why are you saying roof racks are awful? I would like to hear before I order. Thanks |

In my opinion (for bikes at least) hitch mounts are much better than roof racks.
Roof racks are ugly, make a ton of wind noise, are a pain to throw bikes on (especially a muddy dripping MTB), and aren't easy to pull on or off. Also they can screw up the paint pretty badly. The hitch is just a much better solution, 1 bolt to take on and off and it acts as a bumper guard to keep you from bottoming out and crushing your exhaust (which I almost did once and the hitch saved my exhaust tips). So I'm very pro hitch. With that said, depending on what you're carrying the hitch may not be appropriate.

As stated above the wind noise and lower MPG are a drag too. |

I called Curt manufacturing last week and they told me a hitch is not on the table for the 2 series in the near future due to limited production runs and a lack of a development vehicle. They said 6 mths to a year.....
I prefer a hitch style rack and will hold on to my One-Up rack hoping they release a hitch in the near future. I can't due without a bike rack longer than a couple of weeks at the most so looks like I will be traveling down the roof rack ave |

I did contact Curt regarding the F30 before they released their hitch, it was a similar case but I believe if anyone lives near the area of one of their offices they'll get a free hitch for offering their vehicle for measurement and testing.

I think that Euro only tow bar/hitch has always been available, just crazy expensive - but it's nice to see. Perhaps a soft top is in my future to keep the wife happy.

As I understand it, tow bars are available from BMW for all series 2... except the M235i (because it has exhaust pipes exiting on both sides of the car).

I've just been through changing a BMW tow hitch over I had on my 116i which didn't fit my new 116i m sport even as well the control unit didn't work and this had to be changed as well. I was lucky I made it part of the deal to upgrade to the new car. BMW had to install a new tow hitch which was a M tow hitch and control unit and no cost to me. It was due to the design M Sport bumper for the tow hitch.

For US spec M235's there is not a hitch option and so far the aftermarket hitch manufacturers in the US are not planning on developing one due to low production numbers and lack of demand. I am still searching for a fabricator to make one for me...until then the seat down/trunk option is getting used a lot

Trailer hitches for the 2 series including the M235i are available in Germany and most of Europe. The problem is that BMW has approved the use of the trailer for all 2 series coupes but not the M235i. It would be illegal to use in Germany because of stringent technical inspections. We don't have those in the US.
Link in German for M235i hitch: http://www.kupplung.de/westfalia-anh...5-11599-1.html You can find the same site in English through: http://www.rameder.eu/ The exception for the M235i has probably to do more with engineering concerns from BMW. Probably overheating when you carry heavy loads and other issues with high performance engines. That's probably why none of the M cars are approved by BMW for trailer use. I checked rear space under the M235i and 225i and I don't see a reason why the hitch wouldn't fit. I plan to get the Oris version later in Spring when I visit Germany. Will let you know how it works out. |
