Hi!

Earlier this week, I hit a

BWM SF quoted me 1500$ to replace one wheel, 2 front tires and do an alignement.

So I sourced 4 used wheels and tires for $850 (same brand and model) on Craigslist and replaced:

• Broken front left wheel with craiglist front left wheel and craiglist tire
• Original front right wheel with original front right wheel and craiglist tire

Today on the freeway, I noticed a very subtle vibration coming from the front (between 60mph and 70mph). I would guess it was mostly coming from the right.

I got back to the shop and they did another tire balancing. I did not have time yet to go on the freeway and hopefully this will have solved my issue. But if not, what are my options?

The guys at the shop said a bad alignement wouldn't cause any vibration. I also visually checked the suspension and arms and did not see anything suspicious. The used tires are also fine and have more thread that my previous one.

1) do you feel the vibration in the steering wheel ?

2) if you felt vibration in steering wheel, then if possible move front wheels to back and back to front. If you then feel vibration in seat or floor but not steering wheel - then you know it's a front tire wheel issue.

3) there are a lot of different type of wheel balance machines - so make sure shop is high-end and specializes in high end cars.

I do feel the vibration in the steering wheel but it's also very subtle.

I cannot move the front to the back the car has two different sizes for the wheel between front and back.

So it's probably a wheel tire issue. If the car tracks like normal - doesn't pull sharply when you take hands off wheel but gradually follows slope of road - then you PROBABLY didn't bend a suspension component.

You need to assess the machinery the tire place used.
And you need to look at the wheel weights - there should only be one strip of stick on weights on the inner barrel near the outter face of the wheel. If you have very long strips of weights or weights at two or more locations on the wheel, then that may signal a balance problem.

I'd also suspect wheel/tire or possibly hub; suspension parts are more likely to give weird noises and pulling or odd handling. I had a wheel that went out of round, but very subtle so hard to eyeball on the car. It was a center shift, but not a side-to-side skew, so no visible rim deformity, and from the front it tracked steady, but with a subtle up/down oscillation (NOT subtle at traffic speeds). I donated it to a local charity for recycling to be sure it didn't get 'recycled' the wrong way (fun fact is that a $250 Enkei wheel is worth about $11.50 in recycling money).

Yep. Especially the paragraph about BMW rims bending easily. I?m on my second m235 and my stock rims and tires are stacked in my garage they came off day 1.

Bent wheel, damaged tire, shitty balanacing...

Not sure where u got it all mounted and balanced but my local chain couldnt balance anything, even Honda dealership did a better job.

I never do alignments and balancing in chains, either dealer or some reputable shop with proper hardware that's been calibrated

if you hit something hard enough to break your wheel id say your bearing/hub assembly is damaged since damaged control arms would just pull your car left or right or possible clunk when braking or accelerating, but if its a vibration when driving and your wheel is balanced id say its a bent hub, also when your brake does the vibration increase or stays the same? I just replaced bearing/hub assembly in two of my cars and it was what you are describing.

getting back to this. Did not have time to take care of it as I was traveling a lot the past few weeks.

So it looks the vibration are coming from the right even though I broke the left wheel... I had the tire shop rebalance the front wheels and still had the same issue. Then I had him swap the right front tire with my old tire and a rim of the set I bought and still having vibration even though it's slightly less. It's not getting worst when I brake.

You could feel it a bit around 40mph and then clearly at 70mph. Above 80mph I barely feel it...

Any idea what could be the issue coming from? What is really weird is that I fee it's coming from the right (you could fee the right side of the dash vibrating, the left side of the dash is not) even though I hit the front left wheel...

U need to be sure your using a tire shop that caters to high performance cars. And it's often better to switch wheels side to side as opposed to bringing on a third wheel to feel if issue switches sides.
If your confident the tire's and wheels don't have defect or damage and if your in COMFORT and SPORT mode the vibrations become apparent and taper off at the same speed - that might preclude strut damage - then you would put car on lift and check hub bearing for play.
