leaking lubricant from inside the hood?

I discovered this on a very hot day, but not sure it's actually related to the temps.

Opened my hood and found some oily material pooling where the two hood bump stops touch the front of the engine compartment. The various "holes" in the hood inner structure also seemed to be leaking some oily material. After it cooled off I saw that it had thickened - more like a waxy substance than oil.

It doesn't seem to be spraying up from anywhere in the engine compartment, more like it's leaking from within the interior structure of the hood and dripping down the bump stops. The hood shocks don't seem to be leaking.

Anyone else have this or have any ideas? I cleaned it all away and am keeping an eye on it returning, but it hasn't so far.

I would not recommend plugging the holes unless you want your trunk lid to rot out prematurely. They are there for a reason...

I've been plugging it with paper towel/ napkin to try to soak up some of this oily substance.
