Can you hear the turbo in your M235i?
Sometimes I think I can hear it, but not consistently.
But then, my ears aren't that great, either.

I then had to swap back to stock for a period of time. I could here the turbo then only because I knew exactly what and when to listen for. it is pretty faint though. |

It really would depend on how you're driving. The turbo doesn't really start to spool until above 2k - 2.5k RPM. So if you're driving an automatic with comfort mode unless you smash the peddle down you may almost never hit boost (unless going uphill).
If you're in sport mode and you're driving spiritedly you will start to get boost. I doubt you'll "hear" the turbo in this car as it is so well sealed and the turbo is concealed very well. Most people throw on an open intake or a drop in filter to better hear the turbo, also a tune that forces higher pressure should increase that sound as well. If you're driving in sport and spiritedly I don't know if you'll hear the turbo but you should at least hear the diverter valve releasing air. |

What do you mean by "intake?" New intake manifold? New air cleaner?

"Intake" by itself seemed so generalized. Thanks.

The stock intake is very quiet. About the only time I can hear the turbo start to spool up or the bypass valve go off is if I have something (jersey barrier) beside the car or in a tunnel.

I can hear mine, but only because I have the MPPK airbox (big red hole cut in it).

They are called waste gates on turbo-charged aircraft. I once flew in a Beechcraft Bonanza that had a retrofitted turbo-charger with a manual (pilot controlled) waste gate. The waste gate was controlled by what looked like a second throttle. The routine was, push in the main throttle, then start feeding in the waste gate control. One had to carefully monitor the manifold pressure gauge so as not to over boost the engine. It sure did get up and go when the boost arrived!

BOV/DV are there to release pressure in the inlet tract when you snap the throttle closed and the pressure has to go somewhere. Or if you run nothing - the boost pressure goes back through the turbo and creates the famous 'flutter' noise (plenty of debate on whether or not it's good for the turbo itself) DV in theory are better for response as the boost isn't wasted to atmosphere like in a BOV. In Australia anyway, atmospheric BOVs are illegal too. |

I can hear the turbo more so under the following conditions:
1) Colder weather (i.e., sub 60 degree temps). Pretty typical for most any turbo car. 2) When using 50%+ throttle near walls, big rigs, and basically anything to bounce the noise back from the right side of the car (i.e., turbo side). 3) There's more turbo noise after adding the M-Performance exhaust. I run the Torque App and it's a great way to monitor critical data like boost, oil temp, intake air temp, and coolant temp. Depending on gear, rpm, throttle how heat soaked the car is, and ambient conditions, I typically see 9 to 11.5 psi at full throttle from a lower rpm pull. |

I can hear the diverter very clearly with spirited driving (getting into higher RPMs)
