Hey all,
I have the AWE Exhaust with Midpipe, and was wondering if anyone else is experiencing drone. I only experience it when the car is still relatively cold, from about 2.5-3k in Sport mode. I know their technology is supposed to remove all traces of drone, but I am still getting it in that RPM range. Anyone else getting this? I will post a video later...my phone can't pick up the audio good enough unfortunately. |

I've coded out ASD to F006 like the threads have suggested.
Here is a link to the video of the interior. I used my phone so quality is garbage, will try to get a better video. 4 seconds -10 seconds you can hear it if you have good headphones or speakers. |

Using the crappy speakers on my phone and I don't hear it. I'll listen again later with my good headphones. How many miles on the exhaust?

Just listened to this with my headphones connected to a headphone amp. That sounds like it can be pretty annoying. I hope it goes away because this is the exhaust that I've decided on. :/

It won't go away. I'm pretty disappointed since AWE is a good name and claims to have 180 technology to cancel out resonance.
As your exhaust wears over time, any sound packing will get less voluminous and more dense...leaving more space for air and sound to bounce around. Which system is it? It's a full body transverse muffler in back right? No amount of coding will get rid of drone. It actual sound, not synthesized sound. |

I've been lurking on this forum for over a year since I got my car. I was probably one of the first 5 people to get the complete AWE exhaust (muffler and midpipe). I was aware of those guys through the Porsche world, and was pleased to hear when they came out with an exhaust for the 235, so I had my installer order it. When it arrived it looked beautiful. That's where the fun ended. I'm not going to go into the nightmare that the install turned out to be, as that is not the point of this thread. Let's talk drone. I've had many modified cars over the years, and they ALL had exhausts put on them. From 5.0's with Flowmasters, to Dinan M3's, 911's, and my last was a C63 with long tubes with no resonators and no cat's. The reason I mention this is so that you know that this is not my first rodeo. The AWE exhaust droned like a beast from 2600 - 3300rpm. It was horrible. The first day my wife got in the car with the new exhaust, she looked at me like I was nuts. Her comment was something similar to "you actually like that??". Per AWE suggestion, first step was to remove midpipe and put the stock back on. No luck. Drone was just as bad. It was at this point I decided to put an ER catless downpipe on the car. I figured I'd make power, and maybe it would help with the drone. Once again, no luck. Drone was horrendous. AWE told my installer that maybe I was a bit too old to appreciate the exhaust tone. I got a chuckle out of that. In the end, I removed the muffler, and put the stock exhaust back on. My installer refunded some of my money, but after the time and effort involved, it was a hefty loss. Throughout all of this, I've been amazed by the posts from people who say the have the exhaust, and it doesn't drone. I find it tough to believe. I'm generally not someone who posts on forums, but when I saw this, I had to chime in. BTW, if anyone is interested, that muffler is in my garage, in a box. It has about3k miles on it. If you want to experiment with it, first $500 takes it. I paid close to $1750 for the setup. Lol

Damn man.... That sounds like a horror story for $1750....
Truthfully, I was going to get an aftermarket system but I just didn't understand how any manufacturer could get a good Inline 6 sound out of a turbo car. So instead of dropping $1k - $4k on a system, I started experimenting with the stock system. Honestly, this has been the best sounding turbo BMW I've had so far. Now one N54, two N55s and one N20. No tooting my own horn, as I HATE drone. Current setup is ER downpipe, no midpipe resonator, and a modified stock rear muffler (backbox). More sound, shotgun pops and crackles and No drone. |

I like what you did, but I'd probably stick purely with the muffler modifications and leave the stock DP and resonator. I figure I can do those items one at a time at a later date. Do you think that I would need the bypass to the driver's side tip as well or would the muffler modifications be enough? I just want something deeper and louder than stock.

For the record, I am finding that it only drones when the car is cold and for the first 3 miles or so. However, my commute is only about 4 miles so I notice it more. Is this normal?
