m235i vs used m3?

So I'm sure there are topics on this already but could find them. So which would you pick?

For approximately the same amount ~$50k, you can get a CPO m3 with pretty much all of the options the m235i has and it will probably retain a little bit more value, I'd think?

Granted it won't be a new car.

The M3 and the 235 will loose aprox. the same in depreciation in the next 2/3 years. After that, the M3 will reach the "exotic bottom" and depreciate a lot less, but you are looking a 5-6 yrs of ownership for that to make a difference.

Some say the V8 factor will help depreciation. In my opinion it all depends on future fuel prices. If gas comes to $8-10 a gallon like in europe, nobody will want the v8. It's a gamble, very hard to predict future fuel prices.

It will also cost a seizable amount of money to maintain/repair the M3.

I had an e92 M3. Its was awesome. Especially, if you have the DCT IMHO. That being said. If you look at it finacially, a lease on an M235 is going to less than financing 50K.

Maintenance will cost but the CPO should have the warranty and thats what matters most.

But the main thing to consider, is that they drive totally different. I went from th M3 to an E90 MSport Performance Edition (basically Black Grill and factory installed PPK) I love it. Its actually quicker around town with a lot less drama than the M3. The torque is just awesome.

However, the M3 on a track or a really nice winding road where you can drive at or above 7 tenths is amazing. That is the zone the M3 was born for. Now if your like me, I don't get to the track often and I don't live in an area that I can do more than a corner here and a corner there. Its mostly hole shots and a blast onto the fwy etc.

So it really depends on what you want. Both are great - just different applications with some overlap.

This is my exact debate right now. M3 is obviously the more superior car, but it comes with much lower gas mileage and the unknowns of a used car. No matter what the carfax shows, you still don't know what the car has been through. But from looks, to sound, and power...M3 is in its own category.

They are both fun cars. M235i was easier to live with as my daily but the looks and sound of my e92 M had me grabbing the keys more on the weekends. Both got about the same MPG, but I was driving the f22 harder, and the e92 softer. Both had similar tech installed so that didn't persuade me to favor one over the other. If I had to only have one, I'd probably go with the m235i just for the ease of use and rewarding drive characteristic.

i was in this position and ordered an M235i.

I could have got a 2 year old ish M3 for the £40k the M235i has cost, but it would have killed me on petrol £1.40 a litre here roughly, and would have ran out of warranty in a year, and cost more to service, run etc etc.

I got 10% off the list price of my M235i order and am happy with that. I wouldnt have been able to haggle 10% off the used price of an M3.
