How much is too much spent on an M2?

So I purchased my '18 slightly used for $49K 3 years ago (dealers wanted over sticker for new ones and I refuse to pay over sticker).

Since that time I've tried to be very selective with my mods, and either purchased nearly new-condition used parts or new parts at a discount, and installed them myself. However, I still have $74K in the car with plans to buy the Suvneer hood and a set of seats, so I'm looking at around $80K all in.

Now, don't get me wrong, I love the car, and at the time I purchased it there was nothing else on the planet that fit the bill better, or that I'd rather have for $50K, but $80K is a lot to have in a non-CS M2.

I still feel like it's the right car for my needs, and my budget, but I'm certainly starting to sweat a little. Owning it outright helps a lot, but $80K is still wow to me.

Ever total up what you have in your car? Ever think, how did I get here and wish you had gotten something else had you known you were going to spend that much?

Just my personal opinion... Never put above 15-20% in additions to the car over it's value.

Say an M2C was 60k... No way, I would put above 12k into it... thats already pushing it with just exhaust, wheels and a few cf mods... above that i need to move up to a different class of car.

That class of car is Porsche

And that's easily twice what I have in my M2

Well for me its an M3 comp Xdrive...I thinks its in a league of its own compared to the M2C...

Faster, more traction, handles better, more luxurious and performs better in every scenario.

For the FEEL guys, its not the right option... so yea u will have to bang out double the price for a Porsche.

Seems like a pretty good rule. I do something similar, which is to buy like-new parts instead of new, then keep all my OEM parts to swap back upon sale, or sell them to the new owner at a discount (the same price I bought them for originally), so all I'm losing is labor.

Porsche has nothing I'm interested in for $80K. In fact, for me, it's 911 or bust, and I'm not that enamored with the 911 (oh to have a 993).

I looked at the M3 hard before I got my M2, but the increased luxury didn't appeal to me so much, and it wasn't as fun to drive. Dollar for dollar I'd still have an M2, but I may not be the norm. I prefer smaller cars in general as well.

Thanks for your thoughts guys!

I driven several Porsches and they really don’t compare to my M2 as a daily driver.

As far as mods go they add nothing to the resale value. I do mods to make the M2 more personal to me. I have no plans to sell my M2 to resale value on mods don’t really matter to me.

And, if you bought a more expensive car in the beginning, I would bet you would end up modding that car also.

That last point is the kicker, and absolutely true.

BTW, since mod resale isn't a big deal to you, let me know when you sell those BBS

There is also the somewhat Intangible value of the mods and working on the car as a hobby.

A guy I work with took a long lunch a couple of weeks ago to run across town to pick up a $500 putter. I’m willing to bet he has 6K in golf clubs and who knows how much he spends on memberships and whatever you have to put out to play golf every weekend year after year.

Golf, boats, skydiving, paintball, home theater…if you are not going to leave it in the bank Scrooge McDuck style, it’s got to go on something!

It is truly all relative, it fulfills our egos and it is a expression or extension of ourselves .
I am currently running an 850 WPH ,730lb tourqe N55 M2 with a plethora of Frankenstein modifications . This car is weighing in it at well over 120 K excluding labor as I did all my own.
Look at how quickly we can get swept away! As the song says “you can’t be a man if you don’t smoke the same cigarettes as me “… we are all striving for that perfect satisfaction!
I have enjoyed every moment and every personalized touch that I’ve added to this car ,just as much as the man gets turned on by his $500 putter! The simplest modifications that I create or imagine is an extension of my essence.
These cars become an extension of us , almost wrapping around us and creating our own superhero .
As illustrated in the folder of photos that started this thread the imagination is endless.
Brilliant work with the simplest affects ….your photography and intricate attention to detail with each photo is truly moving without any movement!
I wish you were closer, I would enjoy a photo shoot of my Love affair !
May all of you your dreams come true And remain vivid to the end!

Peace !
From Welt to yours !

Absolutely. I think it's also why guys tend to sell their cars once they get them done, as it's the process, not the end result they are after.

I never thought of it that way. I guess with the car completely personalized we become our own Iron Man.

Thanks for the kind words. I too wish you were closer, I'd be happy to take shots of your car! It's unfortunate that there are only 2 other M2's in my area. One is bone stock and owned by an older gentleman that replaced his Corvette with it, and the other I have yet to see on the road.

Looks like it has stock tires. I wonder what the mileage is. I think you've paid $54,106 for a garage ornament, which is totally fine, since you could get 100% of your money back upon sale! I don't disrespect garage queens like others do, I like my car to stay perfect with low miles as well.

10% is my limit…but it's for self discipline reasons, otherwise I'd piss all my money away.

My big spend on my OG was 763Ms. It's why I haven't wrapped my car, added a splitter, diffuser, exhaust, etc. Life is hard.

That all said - I love to see the builds of those willing to pour money into their car. It's such great art, and unique to each individual. Makes me smile.

I had 4S on order but they are backordered for months and I need tires now so I just opted for the Pilot Sports Star BMW. I am at 76K miles since it's my one and only car. My last ICE car as well...
