Having done two Euro Deliveries, and planning our third, we really enjoyed reading and viewing your photo journal. What's so amazing is your accurate description of German hospitality. Must agree they're the most gracious and generous people throughout Europe. Also, pleased to read you took advantage of the German Autobahn and drove “das Gerät” to the max!

If you read through his blog, you'll see he intentionally spelled it the way he did.

In German, "das Gerät", means "thing" and it is used to refer to, well, things. Apparently, recently, there was a famous Turkish man on TV in Germany that kept saying "der Gerät", which is the wrong form of the word. It became an inside joke and, when used in context, this "der Gerät" now means something so good it’s better than any other "thing".

Great report and pics! And you're lucky that petrol is that cheap... I paid just over 100 euro to fill my 2-series tank and that was back in October before petrol prices started falling!

Wow. Great write-up and pics.
My wife and I did the German Romantic Road tour by car quite a few years back and saw many of the same places (e.g. Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Wurzburg, Augsburg, Dinkelsbuhl, etc).
This kinda makes me want to go back again.
Beautiful country..

Here a quick brief: RON-Research Octane Number. And MON (Motor Octane Number) (Used in Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and RoW).

AKI Anti-Knock Index in the U.S. and Canada. This is the number that is posted on the gas station in the USA as "Octane". It is derived as (RON + MON)/2.

Our fuel is rated approximately four to six octane lower than RoW.

Thoroughly enjoyed and still enjoying your blog updates!

Basically the octane numbers on the pumps in Germany have a higher octane number.

For instance...

Super in Germany is rated at 95 MON and is equal to 91 octane in the states.

SuperPlus is rated at 98 MON and is equal to 93 octane in the states

ARAL and SHELL gas stations have another higher graded fuel rated at 102(& 101) octane and are equal to say Sunnoco 94 or 95 octane in the USA.

Also... be aware that most gas stations have "another" super, called: Super E10, it is also rated at 95 octane but has 10% ethanol. So it has less power(or energy) than the normal Super(which only has 5% ethanol).

Personally I use SuperPlus (98 octane) in my cars. I would not feed my lawn mower that E10 crap.

Wonderful blog! Love it all.

Dackelone, you should start a discussion regarding the European gas stations with all the pictures you posted! Sorry, maybe one already exists. In the Shell station picture that you posted with prices, what is the difference between Super 95 and V Power 95? And don't say 5 cents ...

Both are 95 octane, correct? So what's the scoop?

'At 4500 RPMs, the car had some room to grow but both the roads and the “gentleman’s agreement” ensured that 155 was as fast as I could go.'

4500 RPM conforms to break-in protocol. But that's 55 MPH higher than recommended maximum speed until 1200 miles.
OTOH YOLO. LOL.

What a freakin' amazing trip already. Have fun and please share more!

A very nice write up - thank you ! It's always interesting to see an American's impressions of Europe. But why on earth didn't you take your delivery in the spring or summer ? It would have been much nicer. By the way it's not the British who have funny accents - it's you lot LOL !

Aral 102 is my fuel. Very good.

Enjoy the remainder of your adventure. Come here to the West and see the Daimler and Porsche Museum's. The A-81 South to Switzerland is a fantastic drive as well.

Ciao!

How do You dare driving Your own car so hard. The car is not sopposed to take that kind of beating so early in life. Read the instruction manual where it clearly states what the programme for the first 5000 km should be.
If I was Your dealer and You came in with an engine related issue and having seen and read Your nice write-up of your trip and what insane speeds and revs, I would not honor the warranties.

Just read through the whole thing. What an amazing adventure. I will definitely strive for Euro Delivery next time around!!

Shame you didn't get to explore Leipzig more. It is the home of Johann Sebastian Bach!!

Also, I feel your pain with left lane drivers. VA drivers seem wholly oblivious to this courtesy.

Epic ED and very well documented as you are still undergoing the delivery/experience. Thanks for sharing and all the pics are great, keep them coming.

Oh did they provide you with the winter wheels and winter tires? How does that work?
