Is there way to just have the temp info from the ECU computer outputted to an LCD gauge? I'd like to add a temp gauge but don't want those round gauges on my A-pillar or dash. Just want a small LCD screen to tell me what temp its at. something simple.
I am wondering if via enhanced blue tooth could you capture that info via some app out there like Torque.

I was just pointing out how I looked at it - it is funny you mention bean counters too - in my original review of going from the E82 to F22, I said something almost exactly like that. I also like to know when the oil is hot enough so that I can rev the engine freely - I don't rev the shit out of my Duc until it hits two dots on the temp gauge, same concept here...so trust me, we are in alignment for the need of this information. My guess is that it will "appear" in future MYs of the car...much like the original temp gauge in the N54s went from 210 in the middle to 250 or something like that...

Why BMW decided we needed an electronic MPG gauge over a temp gauge is just idiotic. Hopefully a software change will allow us to toggle between a temp gauge and MPG gauge. I don't think there is any other model without a temp gauge.

I hope there will be too. It would be nice to just be able to display this on the NAV screen or something.

I inquired on a coding forum about the possibility of some coding to enable the temps displayed on the cluster without entering the hidden menus but was told it was not possible.

I'm going to play the other side of the field here for a moment. How necessary is the temp gauge?
As long as you drive moderately for the first 5 minutes or so you should be ok. If you are worried about overheating, warnings will appear on the iDrive screen if you get too hot. I get that there is more value if you are tracking the car, but I seriously doubt that most people here will even take their car to the track. I have a temp gauge and honestly only look at it to see if the car is warmed up, which is almost always after five minutes of operation. Just a thought. |

I went digging around for "hidden menu" information on Google, but came up with a bunch of old results, so I figured I'd post this here.
This is the thread that explains how you access the hidden menu, which includes oil/coolant temp information: http://f20.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=715852

With the poor cooling of the N54 and N55, I wouldn't consider tracking a car without a temp gauge. My S52 M Coupe could only handle about 20 minutes of a 30 minute session before oil temps crept up too high. Without a gauge, how would you know what was going on before it was too late? |

The idea to put it as another option on the stalk is brilliant... Just click to get to the screen when you want to look at it. How easy would it have been to do that?

Not sure how an m235i has a history of heat soak, being out three months, and not sure why a car that was tested for 24hours straight on the ring and has been released as an m235i racing with no additional cooling needed, needs a gauge but hey. |

I did say stock. Not heavily modified to cool properly. I'm not picking on the N55, per se, BMW's in general, including M cars have historically had subpar cooling. Aside from possibly an E46 CSL, I can't imagine any BMW surviving 24h of racing conditions in stock form.
