It makes a significant difference. I would not think of getting an M235i without LSD. You simply can't put the power down and you waste energy as the cars brakes apply and try to mimic a real LSD. You'll find many 1st/2nd gear situations on the street where you are trying to put down power and you spin the lightly loaded / inside wheel. This drives me crazy on the 335i. It has been a crime that BMW has not offered LSDs on non M cars since the E36 generation. For some historical perspective in the E30 generation, even a 140hp 318i and 169hp 325i could be had with an LSD (with the "is" package) and it made a difference at those hp levels. I'm really hoping BMW eventually makes an LSD a low cost option again from the factory.

Are there any downsides to an LSD in terms of handling? Eg, can they create understeer?

From what I have read about the advantages that e-diffs (true e-diffs such as on the C7 and the Mk7 GTI with the PP, not mock e-diffs using braking) have over purely mechanical LSDs like the M-diff, it appears so. Mechanical LSDs can have negative effects on turn-in, making the car less responsive at corner entry. Corvette's e-diff goes open at initial turn-in for sharper response, gradually locks up mid-corner, and at corner exit is fully locked to ensure maximum power transfer for throttling out of the bend.

This is the main question for me. It would be awesome if it can be factory installed as I prefer it to be installed with the rest of the car at once, I'm not quite confortable with my dealer mechanics tearing apart my brand new diff, I dunno, it's just that it's better if it comes like that from Germany.

how does that work? I read that in the press release too.

I would have thought it functioned with the dsc. Since 90% of my time I will be daily driving, is the LSD not worth it then?

Edit: Hopefully it works like the M3..

Yes, you will feel the difference daily driving. Off the line the rear end will hook up much better especially if the pavement is uneven or if you are turning. The LSD will act instead of the traction control using the brakes and cutting power to stop the spinning of the inside wheel.

BTW, LSDs are awesome in the snow. That was the hot ticket for inclement weather driving before traction control existed. If you want controllable drifting on slick surfaces, you want an LSD.

Personally I think this should have come standard on the M235i. The fact that they are using it in motorsport M235i Racing makes me inclined to believe that this car was designed with one in mind.

LSD in snow and ice

Folks

I had a quite LSD on my e91 335i.

This combined with winter tyres and some extra ballast in the trunk, car was almost unstoppable in the snow

I'm absolutely shocked a $50k RWD car wearing M badges on the fender comes as a one-wheel wonder?

My '87 325iS had one for Chrissake.

LOL, I'm going to have to remember "one-wheel wonder." Hopefully if we keep talking about how ridiculous it is that the M235 does not come with an LSD, BMW will put it on the list. Are you listening BMW?

More expenses? If I'll add LSD in Israel it will be at list $5000 so it’s the same price of the M AMG45 at the end.

but still its not RWD

I would bet on the BMWP LSD for the M235 being in pre-built exchange 'pumpkin assembly' thereby being a relatively simple dealer fit procedure.

It won't be cheap though either.

But, if it does come pre-installed in a diff unit, that would beg the question as to why they couldn't simply offer the bloody thing as a factory fit option...

Installed at the factory could make it cheaper and avoid the labor of building with a non-LSD once and then taking everything apart on a brand new car to install the LSD. All that labor is going to be priced into the upgrade somewhere.

Autocar stated that UK M235i cars will come with an LSD as standard.

Typical lazy journalism.

M.Barnes is correct, LSD is not standard on UK market or any other market for that matter.

Post factory, dealer fit option only.
