The ECU does not have a real EGT sensor, it is a calculated temperature so it's not something I would trust.

Get something with a proper HJS cat and don't worry about it !

Hi Paul. Oh I didn't know the exhaust temp was calculated! Thanks for the info.

The OEM cat is ceramic. The HJS (and other) sport cats are metallic -- higher melting point, can handle more abuse. We just prefer the HJS cat because they are high build quality and will most likely last a lot longer without throwing a P420 code, and will properly scrub emissions.

Any follow up on this? How are those HJS cats working out?

Love it. Got the Fabspeed pipe. No check engine light, better throttle response, and good sound (not too loud).

Awesome. Any increased exhaust smoke or smell?

None. That's why I opted for the more expensive cat.

Wow. That's great news. Might have to get me one of those. How much louder is it than the stock cat?

Not much, but changes the tonal quality of the exhaust. Makes it a bit more raspy. Sounds good. At least I think.

What kind of fuel were you using when you melted the OEM cat?

The shop foreman at Santa Monica BMW called me and said "Yep, looks like a lava flow in there." He was pretty cool about it actually. Props to them.

Anyway, for those of you who track a lot, please be advised...
I've tracked my 235i over two dozen days over the last two seasons with no issues - other than using up plenty of gas, tires and brakes. How in the world did you melt a cat?

You know, I really don't know, and neither did the tech. I'm just chalking it up to a defective cat. BMW makes a lot of cars - it happens.

We are currently experiencing around a 70% M235I success rate with no check engine lights on our Catbypass pipes + our o2 spacers.

Fabspeed Sportcat downpipe
Would love a quote to buy only the spacers ? Thx for the pm in advance ;-)
