How Do Dealers Select The Options On Cars?
I'm always curious on how the dealers select the options on the BMW's they get to sell on lots. Do they get what ever BMW sends or do they select the options. I live in Southern California and visited a number of dealers to look at 2's. I've come across some strange combinations of options on them. For example, the weather is warm here most of the year and a lot of 2s I looked at had cold weather packages.

I personally think that the dealers tend to order configurations that they think might be popular among "most" people, i.e. what are the most sought after options ? Heated seats, maybe the Harmon Kardon and navigation. Even though it's relatively warm here, it's still nice to have some warmth during colder months, for sure. I use my heated seats on my VW GLI all the time in the fall/winter. So, most cars on their lots might have the "popular" options, while they might order a few with high end performance options, for the performance enthusiasts. That's what I think, though I have no proof of this. But, it seems to make sense that they would base their choice of options on what is popular and what will likely sell.

given the limited allocations... i've basically seen cars that are either loaded, or stripped.
almost all the m235s i've seen have had a fair amount of options. and the 228s i've seen cars with 0 options to attract the (get a cheap bmw , mostly women crowd) and then 228s that are loaded with premium/nav/track etc. dealers do order the cars the way they feel will sell best. they could order like all white cars that have no options if they felt that would sell. i've seen some really bizarre stuff when dealers mess up. when i was looking for my f30, i saw one dealer had a 328i m-sport in estoril blue, with brown wood trim and beige interior. it was horrible looking took them forever to sell it |

The last 2 dealers I went to San Antonio and Hawaii had a trend of not getting the nav package on everything. I found it strange and frustrating since they only had one m235i and it had no nav package, which I really wanted, but didnt feel like waiting for a order

Cold weather package is near mandatory in cold climates so they might be keeping their options open to move the vehicle through the dealer network if it doesn't sell.

Around here, I noticed a bunch of F22's and F30's that were basically stripped that still had the tech package, and fully loaded models that did not have the lighting package.

A lot of dealers in my city don't order them with the lighting package. Don't understand why. They'll have everything but the lighting. That's probably the most important option I would want if it isn't standard on the vehicle I purchase.

Darts and a blindfold, that's my best guess. Or maybe they somehow figure out how i would configure a car and then make sure to order every variation except that one.

Probably more accurate than you think, I mean a bunch of dealers were ordering cars with the inferior auto trans without paddle shifters for the 2014 2 series as a no cost option.

The dealers order them. My understanding is BMW doesn't build a car until it is ordered by *someone*, be that a dealer or an end customer. And they order what they think will sell quickly for the most part. In my neck of the woods, that means AWD, automatic, 50/50 premium pkg, Cold Weather Pkg, in mostly white, silver, or black.
My dealer does have an Estoril Blue M-Sport 228iX with Tech but no Premium at the moment though. Which was great, as I got to see the big screen and try out the headroom without a sunroof. And see EB in person - stunning in the sun! That car also has power seats and leather. Don't know if it has Xenons or not. Otherwise they have a couple no-line 228iX with Premium and Cold Weather, one silver, one white. All three with black interiors. I don't think they have gotten a single M235i in, and it wouldn't surprise me if they never do. Anyone here who wants one will just order it the way they want it.
