Protection Add Ons from My Dealer

Hey guys, so the time is nearly here for me to take delivery of my car and I have been staring at this piece of paper trying to justify costs associated over the long run. Does anyone have any experience and/or recommendations when it comes to putting the money down for these protection options from BMW? Also, I am not entirely sure why my client advisor crossed out BMW Gap Protection since I am leasing...

If you get lease protection, they'll find something to charge to make it look valuable. If you don't they'll waive most things, especially if you get another BMW. My last lease had scrapes under the front bumper, not visible from the front. Didn't even look for them on inspection. There was a small scrape that was overlooked, and I had divots on the back bumper that could have been a $600 charge, also waived. I didn't buy a new car from the dealer I returned it to. Curb rash was also ignored, but isn't charged offense anyhow.

You can get windshield protection through your insurance. If you drive a lot of highway it could be worth it. I used mine once. At that price thoug, you'd have to chip three windshields to come out ahead.

Tire and wheel depends. If you swap wheels for the winter anyway, skip. If you have a history of destroying wheels, consider it at that price in NJ, but for me it's a skip and self insure.

The rest is nonsense. GAP is already built into the price of the lease (generally your acquisition fee).

The only thing to consider on this list is the tire and wheel and you can probably negotiate down a bit the price they are suggesting.

GAP is included, hence why they crossed it out.
You can get (or might already have) $0 deductible window glass replacement through your auto insurance.

Key replacement insurance? Seriously? Didn't even know that was a thing they offered.

Got the lease protection for $1200.
2 months later someone put a nasty door ding on my quarter panel that chipped some paint too...
It's covered, but they won't fix it until lease turn in.
I don't think I'll buy it again.
Although it'd be nice if it includes going over your miles.

I'll probably return the car without run-flats, I'm sure that's covered right?
And if I have extra thread left, I'll have a little fun on the way back to the dealership before returning the car

What MG 228i mentioned is the big problem for me with the lease protection. If early on in your lease you get a dent, major scratch, etc., even if you have lease protection coverage you either have to have it repaired at your expense or drive a car that looks like a beater for the next three years. I just today returned my MINI and the charges were ZERO so I would have thrown a lot of money away had I bought the lease protection. Granted I take care of my cars, even when they're leased, but most of the things they may charge me for I can either get done fairly cheaply (paintless dents, for example) or will be covered by my insurance (windshield). My visit with the finance guy is always very short. I say no to all of it.

Will hopefully be getting my M235 in early March...in production now. Not sure what I'm going to do about the Wheel Protection...got it on my current 328 but hasn't really been worth it. However was wondering if anyone knows how much the stock wheels cost? Might sway my decision if they are pricey to replace.

Any dealer that had a list of useless add-on options like that, I would walk out on.

Face it, if they didn't make a ton of money off that list they wouldn't be offering any of it.

Don't worry all. I passed on all of these things when I went in and picked up my car! Here's how my protection add on-less baby sits today!

UPDATE!

Not but 4 months later I have hit a pothole and hopefully not damaged my rim. Dropped it off to the dealership (they were closed) and will hear back tomorrow what they think. My thoughts now are for the 1600 bucks more, I kinda wish I would've bought the peace of mind...Then again, I went to the bar not but 3 hours AFTER this happened so maybe its the spring weather sam adams talking right now about the peace of mind for the future. I had it flatbedded to the dealership due to the "run flat" tire being completely and utterly flat with the decent sized slice in it...

The tire's certainly toast. The wheel looks like it's mildly out of round. Will probably still be able to balance it, but there's a good chance it's likely going to have a thrum when you drive.

And, seriously, deal with the bird waste!

Hahaha as soon as I got out and looked at it the first thing I noticed was the bird waste. Must've been done when I was driving because my car is garage kept!

Dealer margins on these types of things are really high. Think about some options if you can afford to have the car offline for a bit.

$124 + $14 shipping for the tire from TireRack. Add tax if you're in the same state they are. Assume $25 to mount and balance it. So, give or take, $165.

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/TireSe...cturer=Pirelli

New wheels are pricey. For a 7.5" 436M wheel, $394.06 + $32,95 shipping from BMW of South Atlanta. Add tax if you're in GA. Give or take, $430.

http://parts.bmwofsouthatlanta.com/s...rimLevel=25138

Looks like you could do $700 or so if you want to do the fix with a new wheel, a bit more than 1/4 that for just the tire, buying things outside of your dealer.

I expect the first pass pricing will be a LOT more from your dealer. Tell him you can get it done for $700 and show him how you would do it. One of the dealers I go to would work with me to get down in that direction. Others won't. If your guy won't move, think about doing it outside the dealer.

You can also sneak up on it. If you're locked into the dealer for the tire (no other car and he won't work with you on price), tell him to do just the tire, see how the wheel balances out, and drive it to see if you really need the wheel replaced. If it won't balance well, get the wheel online and have the new dealer tire remounted on the new online wheel for ~$25, either at the dealer or a trusted tire place. There are also places that will repair / re-round an alloy wheel for a few hundred $, but YMMV.

EDIT: Based on ScottSinger's post below, I went back and looked again. 3 hours later, TireRack is now showing very limited stock on the C7s, and the price has doubled.

EDIT 2: Interesting. Depending on how I configure the search, different runflat versions pop-up. There's a "BMW runflat" version that's not limited stock, priced at $241. All-in cost therefore increases to around $825.

They were showing limited availability at $124 when I put the post up. It's now showing July availability at $255 each for the Cinturato P7. You snooze, you lose, apparently.

The tire and rim protection is still generally a bad deal unless you perpetually bang up wheels. Although if you bang up more than 3 wheels completely you may be better off just buying a set of aftermarket rims that are downsized to give you more tire.

Rims can often be repaired and Tirerack is generally a better deal.

FWIW I traded my F30 in with a rear ended bumper (plastic and paint damage), nearly bald run flats with a bubble and some other various nicks and they ended up waiving all the damages when I picked up the 2 after my lease was up. That probably is not typical but had I forked over all the extra money for coverages it would have screwed me out of any incentive.

Rim should be fine. Dealer quoted me $282 for the tire but its on backorder so wouldnt arrive until thursday. I ordered off of tirerack instead for $252 which includes shipping and the tire road hazard protection. Also will arrive at my home on wednesday so ill drop it off to have put on and rebalanced thursday. Seems like a win all around from tirerack
