MT prefers the new STi to both.

Nevertheless great time for the "M performance" beemer vs the AMG model. The M2 might just be my next car.
But didn't the AMG miss third gear due to a slow shift rather than driver error? Maybe I misunderstood, but that was my impression of that spot. Certainly from a subjective standpoint, he was rather unimpressed with the transmission performance of the AMG.

Right?

Hell, add an LSD, M performance suspension and brakes and a modest tune to this M235i. What do you have? A car that is faster AND looks better than the Merc….for less money.

Are you talking about Jonny Liberman's comparo review of the M235i and the CLA45 and at the end the STi make's an appearance? If so, I don't think that was a clear cut decision of MT liking the STi over the others...

You must not confuse an edited video where they have put together footage from several laps where they drift and do show off stuff to make the vids look more exciting with a timed lap... The footage used to make vids like these aren't just shot during one fast lap...

They later did a printed comparo where the STi wins.

If you like Subaru, you'll never buy an M235i instead
Other than that I don't know how you can choose the STI first

The thing you have to keep in mind that when two cars are very close in performance, there is no "Car A beats Car B always and under all conditions". The M235i squeaked out the fastest lap time on this very tight circuit where the AMG's greater horsepower couldn't really shine. The AMG also understeers badly, so the driver must rely on brute force and AWD to drag the car through the corners. On a different course, it's just as likely that the A45 would pull out a win.

It was pretty clear which lap was timed for the A45, but I didn't get that same clarity for the M235i. It appears Sutcliff can't keep his hoof off the pedal mid-corner, at least not long enough for his film crew to get good footage of a clean lap.

Overall, my impression is that Steve is fooling himself a little bit. He's clearly fighting the A45 during the fast lap. The car understeered constantly, and he was struggling with the gearbox, yet he talks himself in to liking it. When he laps in the M235i, he's grinning the whole time, loves the engine, can't muster enough self-discipline to keep the car straight (because he enjoys that sort of thing), and yet he somehow gives the car a reluctant win because "it's not really an M car".

Maybe the take-away is that he's not really enthusiastic about either car. Maybe he's saving his high praise for the M2. I guess we'll see.

I test drove the new STi. Granted, I didn't exactly get to take it to a track for a spin. It's a great driving car. The suspension felt really great. It didn't crash over bumps, but it felt very controlled and delivered great turn-in response. I didn't get anywhere close to the limit on my test drive, but the "real" AWD system (compared to the FWD biased system in the A45) in the STi gives it the ability to do things that the M235i can't. You can simply lay in to the throttle earlier in the turn without much penalty. That lends a certain character to a car though. You feel more like a line backer plowing through the line, rather than a speed skater carving a line.

My problem with the STi is two fold: it feels very boy racer, and the acceleration performance doesn't feel all that spectacular. The flat 4 just doesn't deliver the same punch as the N55 in the M235i or the M113 in the (CL)A45 AMG. The sound track in the M235i is way better, to my tastes as well. The STi is very charismatic with it's flat-4 burble, but the sound of an I6 is sweeter to me. The I4 in the (CL)A45 sounds very angry, and makes some pretty "whoa" sounds under WOT and especially during shifts, but it still has that buzzy I4 sound. The only thing that saves the sound of an I4, for me, is the induction noise, and with a turbocharged engine, you just can't get that.

Sitting in them (the STi and the M235i), the differences are the size of the Grand Canyon. In the STi, there are screens and LCD displays everywhere. The dash is glad with silvery bits. It looks like a car for a 20-something kid wearing a visor, whom you wouldn't want talking to your daughter. I'm sorry if that offends STi fans, but that's the horrible, judgmental, stereotyping person inside me coming out for a moment

I think I understand the genuine reasons MT did that comparo, but I can't ignore the nagging feeling that they just did it to get more page views. As the kind of person who would buy an M235i or CLA45 AMG, I couldn't see myself in the STi.

AMG = M
AMG > M performance models and IS models.

Now that things are in clear perspective. The M235i does really well against a full bred AMG car.
I though I was the only one with this notion. I mentioned this on a previous review post but no one seemed to understand what I was trying to highlight.

The M2 better bring it because the RS3 looks like its going to be a beast judging by the A3 Clubsport Quattro concept.

Yeh I know I've seen it online and the numbers are insane. Not sure Audi has even given a green light for this and not sure how much this will cost but from the write up it will probably be M4 price territory.

The production model won't have that much power, it will probably be detuned to around 400 hp but the concept shows what kind of potential the engine has.

@daleadbull: RS3 might be on par with Golf R400 if VAG finds a proper gearbox; read here:
http://www.carmag.co.za/news/new-mod...ke-production/
It seems like M2 will have strong rivals! We can count somehow Cayman GTS too!

Yes, I love it! We need more small, powerful, performance hatch/sedan/coupes.

The 3 series, A4 and C class models have grown too large.
