Bluetooth Phonebook Issue

I had been using a '15 328 loaner due to delivery delays on my 228i convertible, and had no problems with the phone book information from my Samsung Galaxy S4 phone showing up in the car, available through the bluetooth connection.

I just took delivery of my new 228i, and can't get the car to see the phone's phonebook. The "expert" at the dealership tried for a while to no avail, and an ATT cust support rep tried various approaches and searched their information, and also had no success.

Between the time of with the loaner and taking delivery this weekend, ATT also pushed out the new Lollipop Android OS v5.0.1 to the phone. I don't know if this OS has problems that may be causing the issue.

Any thoughts are welcome.

The behavior of the 2-series and 3-series base Bluetooth setups is different. The base 3-series BT behavior has a number of functionalities that aren't available in the 2-series unless you buy the Enhanced BT option.

This confused the hell out of my CA when I was trying to decide on enhanced or not. We'd already tried my 2 phone (Galaxy S4 mini and Galaxy Note 4) setup in an enhanced BT 235, and then moved over to a standard 2-series. He kept paging through the menus looking for features that he knew were in the base 3, but he didn't know that they weren't in the base 2.

Not saying that's it, just a data point. Also, this predated my Note 4 getting pushed to LP 5.

I sure hope that's not the case. I just spent about 1.5 hours with Samsung on a live chat, and they were no help, but they filed a trouble ticket after I specifically asked that they do so. See what happens, but I'm not optimistic.

Going back and looking at my notes, I was able to pull the phonebook information into a base 2-series on one of my tests. M235xi without enhanced Bluetooth, using my Samsung Galaxy S4 mini.

It didn't get all the data (for example, it knew my daughter lives in Palo Alto, but couldn't pass the street address along to the Nav system, just the city). Was able to hit all contacts for phone numbers as well as my recent call list.

Now, this is a Verizon phone, so the S4 mini never moved past Android 4.4. My Note 4 has gone to LP 5, but the mini's discontinued so I don't expect upgrades.

Latest update, spent about an hour and a half with Samsung on a live chat Sunday night. No progress, but they put in a trouble ticket with their voice group, and told me that I needed to call their voice group for follow-up. Monday night, I spent about 30 minutes on hold and got disconnected, and then another 20 minutes on hold again before I got to a live person. The operator understood the problem clearly, and talked to his product specialist. Bottom line, they said they couldn't help, and suggested followup with BMW and/or Google. I guess my next stop is the BMW Genius hotline, hopefully tonight. Will update with results.

Well the problem is not with Android as I have 5.0.1 on my G3. But I do have the Tech Package which has enhanced bluetooth integration.

Disconnect the car from the phone in your phone's bluetooth menu & erase the car, Then disconnect the phone from the car in the car's bluetooth menu (highlight the phone, press option - delete phone). Then re-pair the phone from scratch.

Might as well disconnect all other prior bluetooth pairs from things you'll never pair with again.. like the BMW loaner you were paired with.

Hope this helps.

Last evening I was preparing to call BMW Genius line about the problem, and decided to delete the pairings on both sides and try redoing them one last time. When I did so, amazingly, the phone paired, and I got the dialogue box I had been hoping to see, asking if I wanted to share phonebook information with BMW, and whether I wanted to see that dialogue box again. I told it to share, and not to ask again. The phonebook finally appeared, and has since that time. I have no idea why it worked this time and not the many times I tried that before, but I guess I shouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth. I hope the pairing doesn't break, because I don't want to do this again. End of the saga.

Thanks to respondents for suggestions and comments.
