I had a 2013 genesis coupe 2.0t rspec. I loved it, personally liked it better then the 3.8 cows the only real issue was the tranny other then that I loved it. I think it looks nicer then the two series but the n55 and trans are just so much smoother it's crazy. I recently traded it out for me 435i the difference is literally night and day. I would recommend the genesis if you want a race car feel and a 2er if you want luxury

I owned a 2014 Genesis Coupe 3.8 a couple of cars ago. There's a reason it's $39k and an M235i is $52k. Firstly, the HP ratings of each car. The Genesis is rated at 348, the 235 at 322. Dyno numbers for the Genesis with the 8AT are 290-295. The 235 dynos at 305-310. The power advantage of the 235 is quite apparent to anyone who has driven both cars.

Speaking of the 8AT in the Genesis, it is quite awful. Relatively slow gear changes, slipping issues and anemic programming that gets the engine caught at low RPMS. This is a good example of Hyundai ostensibly trying to save money by using their own transmission rather than bringing in the excellent ZF 8AT that is in the 235.

The throttle response in the Genesis was also poor, with sport mode improving things slightly but having to constantly drive in that mode is grating and it wastes fuel. I would also say the 235 has much quicker and more accurate steering and better handling all around despite being more compliant and comfortable around town. So yea, one can compare these cars on paper but in reality the Hyundai isn't even close. Is it better value for money? No, because it's a vastly inferior car. You get what you pay for in this case.

I feel obliged to defend the GenCoupe as today I parted with the second consecutive 3.8L manual-transmission Track Edition I've leased. I am thrilled with its replacement, a 2015 BMW 228i automatic, fully loaded with the M Sport package, and there is no doubt that the BMW is more refined in its performance and engineering. However, the GenCoupe is a great drive; 347 BHP from a V6, 0-60 in 5.1 seconds, Brembos all round, a six-speed manual gearbox and limited slip differential is not to be sniffed at, especially at $32,000 for all of the above plus voice-activated navigation, great Bluetooth integration and a whole range of standard features that you pay for in a 2-series, amounting to an MSRP of about $47,000, apples-to-apples. Hyundai have worked hard to develop a genuinely competitive V6 performance coupe at a very good price and I think they succeeded. It handles beautifully when driven hard around corners (it's a great drifter) and once you learn where to plant the needle in the RPM gauge (assuming you're driving the stick) it pulls very hard. It's a fast car. It is pretty, extremely well-appointed and comes with everything a performance car driver might want and nothing that he doesn't. Yes, there's not much in the way of a tuner aftermarket but the stock 3.8L is no slouch when driven properly at the track. It's showing its age now but it is a really good car and those of us who bought or leased one benefited greatly from Hyundai's very successful campaign to prove that it could re-brand itself as a maker of world-class cars.

And that re-branding continues. Remember, everyone: Hyundai poached the head of BMW M a few months ago, and the first exercise under his watch -- a 300hp mid-engined Veloster prototype -- is a pretty wicked piece. Hyundai is already competitive in rally racing with the i20; it's only going to up its performance game from here.

A note about the Genesis: There are deserved complaints about the auto tranny in it, but the manual, as BarryJI notes, is a pretty decent box. Not world class by any stretch, but serviceable.

My theory is for any large company, if they want to make a great sporty car, they should have the engineering in-house to do so. Hyundai is a great company engineering wise - the only really beef w/ the Koreans is their Chaebol corporate setup that makes GM look like a lithe startup in comparison.

This smells a bit like a troll. OP has not posted since the original posting over 5 days ago. But I'll throw in my $.02.

I don't think the two vehicles compare / cross-shop directly. If the OP is concerned about cost, the plus side is that 2014 M235s (and some 2015s) can now be found used and save a few $$. Go with the 2014s and you keep the BMW original service warranty (but not the 2015s).

I don't believe that not posting after starting a thread with a legitimate-sounding question constitutes trolling.

LOL definitely not trying to troll. Just been busy with school

Thanks so much for the opinions everyone! In case y'all are interested, I also posted the same question on the gen coupe forums (out of curiosity). Would be interested in hearing your opinions on their responses

http://www.gencoupe.com/general-disc...ml#post3571234

I will be making my purchase decision in about 3 weeks, and I'll be sure to keep everyone updated on my choice! (235 still tops my list)

It seems like there was a lot of "Well if the turbo engine has issues it will be expensive to fix..". So basically they are saying the BMW is out of their price range, which is fine. I don't think there's any argument that the Genesis is better or equal or even close to the M235i in terms of driving dynamics, refinement or interior quality. Is the Genesis better value for money? Doubtful or at best it's a wash, but if one simply can't afford the price tag on the 235 then it's immaterial.

The genesis is a "specs" car. Throwing a bunch of buzzwords (Brembo) and big numbers (348hp) together doesn't mean the car is any good. Hyundai has a ways to go before they can truly integrate the various components and systems to end up with a car that is as good as its specs suggest. I'm sure it's relatively decent if you don't have much to compare it too, but no way is it as good as even a 228i.

Valid as your opinion is, it would be more valid still if you had driven the Genesis Coupe.

I test drove a genesis coupe last year. was immediately turned off by the lack of cruise control. Bmw is much more luxury than the genesis.

Not sure if anyone mentioned this already but the Hyundai Genesis Coupe landed itself as one of the worst cars in terms of reliability. I'm sure there are people who will defend against the claim, but check out consumer reports. It was one of the many cars I looked at when I was in the market for my car. I opted with an M-Sport 228i with THP and I have no regrets.

I had two consecutive 3.8L Genesis Coupe Track Editions. Never had a problem with either in terms of reliability. 100,000 mile warranty. Don't need cruise control but the GenCoupe had it. Won't use it on the 228i M-Sport either.

Very happy with my 228i...but there is nothing about it that is luxurious. Not built to be frankly. It is very well laid out and funtional.

He didn't like it.
