Not really, this is nothing new. If these were functional vents, BMW wouldn't have blocked them off with camo. Plus what would those vents actually do?

Would just be pleasing to me visually. Not every design element on his car will be fully functional, let's not kid ourselves.

One would hazard a guess that many of the die cast model companies have their models made in China. And we know how the Chinese are when it comes to designs.
