Why don't my doors and trunk unlock??

I haven't figured out the exact pattern but on occasion after parking my car I find that the passenger door and trunk remain locked. I have to hit the "unlock" button on the dash. (Which is inconvenient to have to reach all the way in and push, btw.) But other times everything is unlocked.

What's the deal?

Do you have comfort access? With that you should just be able to go the doors or trunk and they will be unlocked. Otherwise, it's a setting to unlock both doors at the same time (you will see it under settings in Idrive). I personally have mine set to only unlock the drivers door as I am usually solo when I drive my 235. It should be consistent though once it is set and it sounds like you are experiencing different behaviors. Is it the same key every time? Settings are saved on the key so that could be another factor.

From inside the car you need to pull the door handle twice, first time does zip second time opens the door. I have found. Dunno why, figured it was just 'one of those BMW things'.
Boot / trunk - only ever needs one attempt in my experience.

Mine automatically locks both doors as soon as I hit 10 or 15 mph. Are you saying that your passenger door sometimes fails to lock?

I'm not sure about the trunk being locked. To me if it's closed it's locked. I press the button near the driver's footwell to open it, unless I'm behind the car, where I just do the long press on the key fob button.

Beware - it's not always true - I guess being "one of those BMW things", or a software gremlin simply speaking. What's worse - when I learned that closed doesn't necessarily mean locked - there wasn't even a single warning like the icon in the dashboard, or a sound - nothing. But something made me check before I walked away - i just pulled the trunk lid and it simply opened (and i have no comfort access)...

I wonder whether it might happen when I'm driving - because THEN it could really be dangerous, as the lid could open during emergency braking and fly away.. Luckily it never happened, but the mere possibility makes me anxious sometimes.

Ok, I've figured out what's going on, partly.

1. I do have comfort access. I have it set so all doors and trunk lock when I drive off. This works fine.

2. When I turn off the car I pull the handle twice (hate this) and ONLY the drivers door unlocks. I wish EVERYTHING would unlock.

3. Here's my issue: A typical scenario for me would be to, on occasion, come back out to the garage WITHOUT MY KEY and wish to get in the car trunk or passenger side. Since it didn't unlock all the doors when I turned off the car, and I don't have my key, the trunk and passenger door are locked. I am forced to walk around to the drivers side, get in the car and push the unlock button. Is this the end of the world? No. Is it inconvenient? YES!

Can anything be done so when I yank twice (grrr) on the door handle that ALL doors and trunk unlock?

The short answer is no there isn't anything you can do. Just don't forget your key or make the extra effort to reach a couple inches and unlock the door. Or you could buy a different car.

Your first sentence alone would have been instructive and I would have thanked you for that.

The rest of your response was uncalled for and simply shows others that you have a tendency to be a smarta**.

As for the second sentence....I am in fact a smart***. It happens to me and it annoys me as well, especially when I am just trying to get something out of the car in the garage. I usually just hit the unlock button or slide my hand into the handle to unlock all the doors and stuff as I get out and close the door once she's parked.

I agree with you that it can be inconvenient when you park in your own garage, and the passenger door remains locked after you unlock the driver's door. Since there's nothing you can do about it, I've adopted the habit of pressing the unlock button in the middle of the dash between the vents every time I park in the garage, for the very reason that you mentioned. It's less aggravating for me to do that than to come out to the garage later to open the passenger door for something, only to find it locked.

A minor, minor nitpick to be sure, but yes, I have been annoyed on occasion when it has happened.

The reason why you have to pull the door handle twice is probably because you have the settings on to lock the doors once you start driving.

First pull of the handle unlocks the door, the second pull opens it.

You can code the car to unlock the doors when the car is turned off

Unlock doors on engine off
FEM_BODY 3040 CLM_UNLOCK_KL15OFF_AFTER_PIA_AUTO_LOCK aktiv

When vehicle is turned off, all doors unlock automatically

Thank you. If I can find someone in my region to do coding I will have this and quite a few other things changed.

I have my car coded to unlock all doors as soon as the engine shuts off. You only have to pull the latch once to open any door.

You can also go into the iDrive or BC menu and select ALL doors to unlock instead of just the driver's door. At least that is how it is on my 135i. I'm pretty sure BMW has not changed that feature.

And yea... you can also have it coded to unlock the doors(either way, I mentioned above) when you turn off the engine.
