news flash: cars are rarely investments.
Quite so.

People do these things because they love cars, not because it's a financial decision.

My friend dropped over $50k to build his Nissan 240SX... a car that is not really worth anything in resale value. Now he has a awesome 240SX that scares the crap out of Porsche GT3 owners on track and looks like it just rolled off the showroom floor. That is something you can't walk into a store and buy.

It's built, not bought.

I can't recall by how much, but the all aluminum S65 is actually lighter than the iron block S54. The problem for the S54 is that the I6 configuration is very long, while a V8 is a very compact. That, combined with the aluminum construction really saves a lot of weight.

I got the sense the dude just threw out a $50K figure without giving it a whole lot of thought.

Motec ECU, compromised steering, no donor drivetrain, AND $50k?

This is a joke.

There's no way that labour and splicing wires is going to be $50k. $50k including the E46 and donor S65 drivetrain WITH 100% OE wiring integration might have made some sense, but as it is right with some aftermarket engine management? Hell no. This is pure idiocy. There are better shops out there for this stuff that actually know how to integrate the CANBUS systems properly.

it is an AKG adjustable short shifter, the factory leather shift boot wouldnt reach all the way up, will have a trim shop extend the leather to the top

Going backwards if you ask me. The e46 doesn't need messed with. It's perfect the way it is.

I can appreciate the comment above about being built not bought but this isn't a large enough improvement to justify spending even half of that money.

s65 doesn't weigh much more than the iron block s54.
Probably closer to the firewall as well.

I see no reason to think it's closer, but given the same distance from the firewall it should have its COG further back since it's 2 cylinders shorter.

The s65 short block (no heads/cam/vanos/etc) is lighter than the S54 short block. The S54 long block (complete engine) is ~30 lbs lighter than the s65 long block.

Thanks for replying - I guess I've never seen that shifter before. The leather should improve the looks.

Love the sound, though!

Do you have a source for that, because official BMW materials specifically state that the engine in the E92 M3 is 15 kg (33 lb) lighter than the previous model.

He weights them both, on the same scale.

He weighed engine and transmission, with the S54 being equipped with a 5-speed. We don't know what transmission that is or what the torque rating is. With only 120 lbs difference, even with a lighter transmission, it seems that the S65 swap doesn't result in much weight gain, if any at all when you're comparing apples-to-apples.

We know exactly the transmission and it's weight compared to the 420g manual! People swap them into e46 Ms routinely for track use (largely because of the 25 lbs they save vs stock).

And this is one thread of many, just the first I pulled up. When people weight them fully dressed, the s65 is ~30 lbs heavier.

I said it's a not a lot of gain. I just like to clean up BMWs lie when possible

I see. I guess I shouldn't be all that surprised, given the number of mixups in BMW marketing materials over the years.
