Last winter I had a RWD G37 with Toyo Garits. Those were great tires and I only got stuck once, which is saying a lot given the winter we had. Would like something at least that good. Last edited by Duster; 10-21-2014 at 09:37 PM.. |

Best price I found new, installed for 18" Nokians was $1197 both in Oakville and Etobicoke. |

I got 225/45R-17 Dunlop SP Winter Sport 3D for my M235i. I had the 225/45R-17 Dunlop SP Winter Sport 3M (3D replaced 3M) for 5 years on my 135i. I have to say it was the greatest winter tire i have had yet.
Gripped very good in the snow and was great on the dry pavement. There were times i pasted 4x4 trucks with only all season tires that couldn't make it up the hill. This is why i bought the same (new version) for the m235i Here is my setup

I used Dunlop Winter Sport 4D's last winter (prior to that I used M3's) on my E36 daily and have found them to be an excellent performance winter tire. Absolutely no traction issues in light to moderate snow up to 4-5"....and the only reason it becomes mildly concerning beyond that depth is because the car starts to plow due to the low ride height. An X3/X5 it ain't.
What no one should ever do is put a pure-bred winter tire on this car (or any BMW IMO). The steering and handling goes to absolute shit, to the point that the car becomes dangerous even during dry conditions. Example: Pirelli Winter Carving Edge. Stay far away. I usually get two seasons out of my winter tires before they're at the winter wear bars. I tossed the Pirelli after one season.

I'm almost decided on the Hakka R2's.
They get great reviews. I'm a little worried about the handling, but it looks like lots of people put these on beemers and I'm not expecting great handling in the winter anyway. I don't think they'll be worse than the x-ice...? |

Take a quick search on kijiji or craigslist for 'bmw nokian' and you'll see the combo is quite popular which was reassuring as well. Reviews are the highest I've seen among any winter tire and I really don't think you will lose out on much especially if you slightly overinflate them which I like to do (especially since the colder weather decreases the psi as well). I'm most likely putting my R2's on next weekend so I'll update afterwards. |

Will that size fit fine on a M235i with the M sport calipers?

I ordered: Michelin Primacy Alpin PA3 SL on 17x7.5 Anzio Light Bright Silver rims today. Went with 225/45 on all corners. Tire Rack is amazing, they already shipped them. They also guarantee the rims listed on their web site, once you enter your car info, will work (so no worries on calipers clearance).

With the 08 335i wheels they will need an 8mm minimum spacer. I currently have a 12mm but I may get a 10mm so they don't poke as much.
You need the spacer to clear the front brakes. I still haven't decided whether I want to paint them black or not. Last edited by CONTROL ONE; 10-24-2014 at 09:59 PM.. |

^^ you should look to get some mud flats - those wheels dont look like they fit too well and are going to fling salt rocks and stones all over your paint

The poke is a bit much. I was thinking about getting 10mm spacers to dial it back a bit from the 12mm.
I'm just concerned over whether 10mm will clear the calipers or not. |

Hey Control One, I just got Nokian Hakkapeliitas on my 335i XDrive, and am curious if you felt them as I did. So Sottozeroe Serie II were great for Ontario and medium form Northern Quebec dry -20 -40C. They did not like dry ice (40 kph max). Handling was superb, one of my best 0-60, 4.3s, was on the Serie II. Add a bit of slush, wet, -15 to 5 C and they are superb. Wear quickly, but very sporty. Hakkas? Incredible longitudinal traction, very stable, they are glued at -40 -20 etc. Superb be it noisy if suddennly braking. But OMG laterally, they felt understeering lots, which was just lateral instability due to softer sidewall than PSS or P Zero or Serie II. Must be careful taking certain curbs, and almost considered returning them. My initial pressure was 34F 36R 18C. Their symmetric thread also wants to go straight. During this particular long journey, at -8C stopped and checked pressure with a digital gauge. Found out that they dropped to 32F 33R after 400 kms. I upped it to 34F 36R at -10, and they have been better. Not near Sottozero II, but more stable turning. Rate it Medium for lateral stability. Might go 35F 38R. Did you have the same impressions? Linear traction, deceleration, but soft turning? |
