Quick Lease Question on European Delivery

Signed lease on May 30.

Picked up car on June 28 (European Delivery).

Does my lease start May 30, or should it start June 28? My dealership started it on May 30, so I essentially paid for a month I didn't have a car. I know they pick up a payment, but I thought that was for the travel time to get the car from Europe back to the US. Am I mistaken? I just want to understand if I'm in the wrong before I speak with my dealer further.

Thanks for any insight you guys have!

Your sales person is an idiot. Any knowledgeable ED sales rep would have told you that you can wait up to 7 days before pickup to sign the lease contract so you don't run into this issue. There is no need to sign 30 days in advance, as that is your lease inception.

+1. I signed my paperwork 3 days before I left for Europe.

Well, fuck. I'm upset. Do I have any remedy besides trying asking the dealer to make things right and giving me a lease payment back in cash? Not that they would, but it seems like my only option is to ask and then go to BMWNA when they won't help me out.

I'm frustrated because that's what I thought too and my dealer insisted that everything needed to be complete a month beforehand. I just wish they would have admitted they weren't sure so that we didn't end up in this situation. I have been cheated out of a month of my lease.

Falconati, sorry to hear you got abused. Many dealers are not knowledgeable about ED and it could have been due to ignorance and not malice. Regardless, you should do as you indicated to pursue a remedy.

I've done 4 EDs and my M235 dealer was new to ED so I gave them direction and was even able to date the lease docs for the day of delivery in Munich.

Good luck.

Not sure what course you can take to rectify the situation. You could ask for some extra dealer installed extras as a concession. I assume all of this would generally be a goodwill gesture by the dealership. Something they can subsidize easily while satisfying you from a cost perspective might be the way I would go. Some carbon fiber interior pieces perhaps.

Thanks all for your suggestions, I really do appreciate it.

This was my first BMW (and first European Delivery). The trip was great and I love the car, but to be honest, the buying experience has been terrible so far. Negotiation was ridiculous, and this is just icing on the cake. I know that my dealer was not malicious here - I don't think they do very many European Deliveries (my dealer is in Madison, WI - home of great beer and cheese, but not EDs ). I am working with the head finance guy now, so hoping that we can find some middle ground. I'm flexible on what they do for me, but hope they do something to make me feel like they're doing right by me. I'm just really frustrated right now because this was such a major purchase for me.

Thanks again for all your replies, very appreciated.

I would also write to BMW NA that you are very dissatisfied with what happened. Your dealer should pay 1 month of your lease for you to rectify what happened. BMW is supposed to pay your second month, let your dealer pay the third and that should be fine.

I didn't even mail back my sign doc a day before I left for ED. A month is way to early, you be paying 3 months of lease to drive the car on your trip before you get your car back in the state.

if you want the car longer, BMWFS usually extends the leases up to 6 mos or a year with little issue...especially if you claim you want to order another car and have to wait for it...

Thank you all for your messages. I am currently working out something with my dealer. I am fairly frustrated that I had to make multiple calls to my dealer, BMW FS, and BMW NA Special Services (the people that handle ED) in order to get something done. There was a good amount of finger pointing at who should do something about this. Ultimately my dealer is going to do the right thing, which I appreciate.

That's good news.

I'm curious, did this get sorted to your satisfaction?

I too would be angry to pay for a car I don't even own yet.
It may not be malicious, but it sure it wrong.

Still waiting for a check, should get it this week hopefully when I take delivery of my car. I'm holding my breath until it actually happens though - I fully expect to have to bring it up myself.

Yep, they came through. Didn't even have to broach the topic. Glad to have some closure, and they apologized.

That's good news! Glad everything came to a satisfactory conclusion. You enjoying your car? Did you get it back yet from the ship?

Awesome! I have about 30 days left to sign for mine. Waiting to see what lease rates are for September. If they stay the same, I might just wait until October 1st to sign. Wouldn't be mad at BMWFS if they gave us a 65% residual :P

I have another question about european delivery and leasing.

Does anyone know when they calculate the lease payment do they use the US retail MSRP as the basis or the ED MSRP? I would think they would go off the US retail as the ED price is more of a discount. However, I wanted to be sure before negotiating terms.

It used to be ED MSRP, but that changed and it is now based on US MSRP.
