Angry Delays in 2 series convertibles (F23)

Regarding delays in delivery of new 2 series convertibles. See the notice my dealer has provided me. Mine has been sitting in Newark now over a week, awaiting the part.

By the time mine is at port it will be in the beginning of April timeframe anyway so this isn't particularly scaring me.

But it's weird that BMW Genius tells me mine is unaffected and not going to be stopped anywhere along the way.

Are you sure it's not going to end up at Port waiting for the soft top boot?

Who knows, only time will tell.

BMW Genius continually tells me no that will not happen.

I did read last week that the supplier was back up and running. Just not at 100%. If the BMW estimate of 1000 units is all there is, I don't think it would take much time at all for them to get caught up and have your order ready to go when it hits the VDC for processing.

Keep us posted on the progress.. I've got my fingers crossed for you!!

Will do.

A little frustrated now because everything went so smooth thus far - but now I've hit a wall.

The car hasn't moved since Friday morning from the port. No updates.

Based on what I've read online, it seems there's usually only 2 ships a month that come to the US. Can't remember where I read it, but what's what I remember. If that's true, it might be there a 2 or 3 weeks before it leaves for it's boat ride.

Have you tried going to the Wallenius & Wilhelmsen site and using your VIN to see what it might show?

http://www.2wglobal.com/

Go there... then click the track and trace link. When that comes up, enter your VIN in the CARGO ID field.

Let us know what happens...

Good to hear!
Maybe you are lucky and yours is one of the first completed ones. Production was supposed to be back on for convertibles with week 14.
Week 11 was just one cycle before that, as they don't make convertibles every week.
Hope you don't have to wait for it because they hold it at port.
I'm still scheduled for week 14. Which is fine, since it was -10C today in Toronto.

I hope that isn't the case. Genius told me it's usually up to a week before it gets assigned a vessel.

I've tried once a day the past few days with my VIN on that site but nothing yet...

Seen somewhere on the Wallenius site some time ago that it's usually 1 ship/week to the East Coast. You may not get on the first ship though if the "line-up" is too long. It's not just BMWs on those ships.

Thanks for posting! A glimmer of hope lol.

I would guess that I will be loaded on today for the 23rd and arriving here April 5th.

Genius told me check in 1-2 days so that seems right!

Confirmed! I'm on the "Toscana" Voyage #CA712

My vin now shows tracking info on the Wallenius site.
Genius says I'm on that ship and departed last night/today.

ETA in NYC 4/5! Can't wait!

I'm on the Tongala (CA711). Original ETA for Port of Newark was 3/30 (today), but it got pushed back to 4/2 and now 4/4, so the Toscana is not far behind the Tongala. Wondering if yours is running behind schedule as well.

Ouch. That's a big pushback. Yeah mine started out 4/5, then 4/6, now it has been 4/7.

My 230i vert arrived in Newark on March 6, and it is still awaiting the boot cover part. 😕

That really blows.. and the worst part is that it says the part won't be available in the US till mid to late April. You might have to wait till May to get your car. I feel horrible for you.

Now here's the kicker. That alert message they sent out about the F23 retro fitting the Top thing... It doesn't expire till the end of May. I wonder what that means for others like myself... Does it mean that when my order is built in April, it might sit at the VDC till the end of May for the top cover too? I wonder if the F23s that will start being built this week will get the cover at the factory? All I know is that I heard Recticel, the supplier, was back up in limited production in March and was suppose to be back at 100% on April 1. Wish I had more info...

I was told today that my order was still in the "Order Bank" and that there were no modifiable 2-series chassis available at the moment. Could someone please explain how this process works? It sounds like the number of chassis available is limited.

^^

Lol, it's not that there's a literal shortage of 2 Series chassis available. It's that dealers are only given a specified number of "allocations" for each series. In other words, if 200 people wanted to order an M240i at your dealership tomorrow, all those orders couldn't be fulfilled. Larger, better performing dealers get the most allocations, but it's still a mystery to outsiders. I know when I ordered my M240i on 1/26, they didn't have a readily available allocation and I had to wait a few weeks for a production number. Be patient and request full transparency from your CA. By "modifiable", they mean that a current allocation they already have on order (but not yet in production) for their regular inventory cannot be modified to your individual request (options).

That makes sense. Thanks. I ordered from a very large dealership. Hopefully it won't be too long then.

If they're a large dealer, ask them to try and get one from regional. Basically what they can do is trade allocation with another dealer that has one that can be modified. That's what my dealer did.

Here's what happened to me... I ordered and dealer said if he didn't have allocation, he would get one. I called and asked for a production number for tracking and was told BMW wouldn't not allow modification or take any orders till April 1 for 230i verts. I took the ordering managers word.. But I happened to stop at a different dealer to just see a 240i Vert. When I told them I had order and the issue I was having, they checked their system and told me BMW was taking orders/modifications and they had allocation.

Next day, I was at my dealership... Sat there while the ordering manager looked in his system for allocation then watched him make the call to the other dealership to trade. They ended up trading an X5 allocation to get me my 230i..

Ask your dealer to do a search for allocation with another dealer while you watch. If there truly is none, you'll have to wait.. if there is, ask them to call and do a trade..

Good Luck!
