JB4 Frustration
Hi Guys, Recently installed the JB4 on my 2015 M235i 6-speed.
Everything went pretty well on the install. Only took about 15 minutes to complete the hardware install, and another 15 to download the latest firmware etc. I decided to turn on map2, because I have an intake, and my exhaust / DP is on the way. All gas around here is 93, so it made sense. I noticed an increase in boost, the time the boost holds, and a pretty noticeable increase in power. The only issue I'm having, is when I launch or open it up completely. The boost holds and the car keeps accelerating all the way through 7,000 RPM / redline when I shift. AS SOON as I shift and get back on it, there is a noticeable "lag" for roughly an entire second or two. Its so noticeable, that it feels like traction control kicked in and cut power. I literally get jerked forward at the loss of power. After a second or so, it picks back up and you can hear the boost again. It then takes a second or two to actually feel like I've connected again. So strange. Do you think this is a boost limit issue with the tune? Back-pressure issue because I don't have the exhaust / DP on yet? For the record, I've driven many tuned and even a few big turbo cars (all german), and never have experienced anything like this. My initial reaction was traction control coming out of second gear, which made perfect sense. When I turned traction control completely off (by holding down the button), it still happened, which is why I am here. Also for more information, I only downloaded the latest firmware (3.0) - and hope that is all I need. If I need to install each individual one, let me know. ANY input would be greatly appreciated. I've never really used a setup like this and I'd rather not try and act like I know what I'm doing. |

I have a JB4 on a 6MT N20 motor and I notice this as well. I changed the " auto shift boost reduction " to 0 and it seemed to help a bit.
Im having flex fuel problems at the moment that Terry is helping with. Im hoping the boost lag goes away when my flex fuel issues are solved. Last edited by Silvermike; 04-05-2015 at 06:21 PM.. |

i sold my JB4 as it just had too many issues !! Sure it makes more power but I sacrificed the overall drivability of the car so it was removed and I added the Manhart tune !! Never had a single issue !! Good luck

Haha thanks for the input man. I might be going that route as well. I'm not complaining because, how can you really complain for $500, but for a car I'll be driving 3-5 days out of the week, I need zero issues.

They have a JB4 support forum where you post your specific issue and details and then an actual JB4 engineer helps you solve it. That might be a good first and last stop for any technical support or problem resolution.
I think this is the proper link for it: http://www.n54tech.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=35 |

I have a hesitation when first getting on throttle with my M235i (catless DP). I'm hoping to get some time to record logs and solve the issue. May just go with another tuner though. I love the utility and support JB4 offers, but I'm experiencing enough "glitches" that the frustration is building...

This is a known issue and frankly because the JB4 is being reused for every N55 platform they dont care to address it because 'it should work' the same as every other car.
The JB4 tune for the M235i was not 'made' for THIS car like some of the other higher priced tunes are, this is a general one size fits all N55 tune. I'm no Dinan fan but one of Steve Dinan's last videos address this EXACT issue about lag when shifting. A way to mitigate this issue is to not go WOT at gear change but wait a half second or so, or ease into WOT as opposed to just flooring it through the gear change.

Same here… The lag in the higher gears is even worse to be honest.

Sorry to hear about the issues you are having OP.
The problems you are having can be due to one of the following:
I can guarantee you that unless there was a problem with the tuner , car or firmware you should not be having these issues. Instead of uninstalling the tune and paying more money to get another one which might and might not work, just contact Burger Tuning technical support and they will figure it out for you. Every customer having issues should contact the manufacturer's customer support first and forum members later. It is more likely that a manufacturer will fix your issue rather than forum members.

Now here is my question for all of you experiencing these problems. Have you data logged and sent them to Terry to review? If not then this thread is pointless.

I recommend contacting Burger tuning technical support instead of Terry for a faster response.

Yup. Terry has been very helpful with my issues thus far. Hopefully it will all be sorted once I get time to work on the car and get some logs this weekend.
