I get that question asked at least once a week by customers. (usually since the salesmen mention that the car has a twinscroll turbo and they aren't able to properly articulate anything past the name.)

It's also pretty bad the other way around when customers try to argue about facts. Can't upset them or they walk out and as a car guy it kills you to let ignorance/misinformation flourish.

If I wasn't purchasing the car at the deal I was offered, I would have probably walked away from the conversation. At least they had some enthusiast tech's and junior sales gents that warmed up to me on my first service visit. Restored a bit of faith in the team over there. lol brutal sometimes..

My experience with BMW sales staff has been nothing but positive - they knew the cars inside and out and were well aware of the differences in powerplants and other details. Every one of them was over 40 and the two best I dealt with were over 50. Obviously, some dealerships have higher employee standards than others.
Regarding the original topic here, there is a lot of information regarding both engines on Wikipedia and other sources. One of the biggest differences aside from the number and design of the turbochargers is that the N54 did not have variable valve lift, although it had variable valve timing. The injectors on the N54 were piezo-type rather than the solenoid-type used in the N55. Interestingly enough, the N54 carried on in certain models beyond the E9x LCI change to the N55. The 335is, 1M, and "sDrive Z4 35is" were equipped with the N54, with the Z4 retaining that engine until its production end in 2016. There were other significant differences, just as the B58 is significantly different than the N55 it replaces, but "efficient dynamics" seems to be driving engine design for non-M models.
