Big man with the horn, BIG MAN WITH THE HORN!

When do you use your horn? Me personally only a quick tap at a stoplight when someone is not paying attention. It seems like a lot of drivers think that a horn honk is a warning to not be in front of them. And my point is a honk is only going to make me... what?

That is the question

LOL all depends on where you live, and how others perceive your horn and it's "tone". Just the length of time on the horn alone can trigger road rage lol. A tap of the horn is usually perceived as communication in my experience.

I started driving in downtown Toronto, and you almost have one hand on the wheel, and one over the horn when navigating the core, it's like a videogame, and no one really seems to care about being honked at, they'll just flip you off and drive away. Living in a small town, people tend to get a lot more offended by horns, than not. I've been at a light where an old lady was 5-10 seconds late on the Green light, and no one honked, I was shocked... It's different everywhere, imo, but always err on the side of caution when doing this, lol

I like to do a quick double tap for those special occasions...stop light sleepers and side swipers.

I almost got in a fight one day. I had pulled my airbag to swap my wheel, put it back and it seemed ever so slightly off center. At a light I was trying to adjust it, not really thinking, and laid on my horn for a good 30 seconds. Guy ahead of me leaned out the window.

New York Minute:
A New York minute is an instant. Or as Johnny Carson once said, it's the interval between a Manhattan traffic light turning green and the guy behind you honking his horn.

Usually only for collision avoidance. On the rare occasion, to highlight an asshole among us. In the DC area where I live, horns are used for a multitude of things ranging from aggression to someone taking .1 seconds to respond to a green light, as well as voicing your disapproval at anyone causing you to be a few seconds late to work. #asshats

The length of how long I get on it is directly proportional to how much of a moron the person it is aimed at, is being.

Like if someone is not paying attention, and light turns green, I usually give them 2-3 seconds before I will give a very brief notification just so they look up.

If it is something that could have resulted in a serious accident, I will lay on it like it is going out of style. I had a woman in a minivan switch lanes, right into me, I had to swerve into the shoulder. I was on it the whole time she was turning into my lane, she just kept going. I ended up flooring it in the emergency lane and getting ahead of her, all the while on the horn.

Mind you she wasn't like slightly ahead of me before starting to turn, we were right next to each other.

This. Nothing wrong with a polite "toot toot" to remind the driver ahead of you that it's time to go if they're not paying attention.

Some drivers here just make me want to lay on my horn for a minute or two. But a quick tap to get those distracted drivers' attention does not hurt.

Anytime someone is not paying attention to their driving and it could cause a problem I toot. People asleep at the wheel or not paying attention at a light get a short reminder. I don't use the horn as a replacement for my middle finger. I use my middle finger. Can't remember the last time I used either.

My impression is that horn use has diminished over the years, except as occasioned by those (even me occasionally) absorbed by their phones at a light.
The diminution is quite noticeable in New York, where honking used to be a way of life. Not so much these days.

I give a light tap if someone sits at a light for than 10 seconds. I give it a blast if someone is texting or talking on their hand held cell phone. It is illegal to do both in our state so in essence they are breaking the law.

This with a wave is perfectly appropriate and polite imo.

Yes they do. I rarely use mine and then only a quick tap to acknowledge a friend or to wake up a "texter" at a stop light. Fortunately have not been in a situation when I needed to "lay on it", to avert someone cutting me off or backing into me.

And lets not forget the left hand lane a--holes driving slower than molasses. They are awful when we drive to Florida and have no clue. Doing 45 in a 70 zone. They get a nice blast if I'm behind them.

Unfortunately that is because people don’t know how to drive properly so you have to assume everyone driving around you can do something dumb any given time like changing lanes without checking the other lane, or they can cross a 4 lane highway from the most left lane directly to the exit on the right that is 50-60m ahead. People don’t know the laws and the rules so they act without thinking of the consequences. Yes these kind of people can be found everywhere on the world but think of it as everyone on the highway with you is like this. You have to be thinking really fast and obsessively checking your surroundings, it’s like paranoia. When I was taking my license the instructor told me that honking is everything if you want to survive here. It also has different meanings so it’s kind of a language, depending on the circumstances it is being used it can mean from a range of thank you to flipping off a finger...

We also use high beams excessively like the horns

We have a saying here that if you can drive in Istanbul and survive you can drive anywhere around the world.

My rules for horn usage:
1) If I have to use my brakes because you're doing something stupid, I'm going to let you know about it.
2) If I have to take evasive action because you're doing something stupid, I'm going to let you know about it.
3) If I have to stay on my brakes because you're not paying attention, I'm going to let you know about it.

Unfortunately, I use my horn a lot.

If someone falls asleep at the light, it helps to point at the green when you toot.
