Question about auto box

Hey guys

Quick question...

On the 8 speed auto, can you manually change gears when selector is in D mode or the paddles/selector only works when in S mode?!

Paddle shifters work in all modes.

Ok. Cause I've driven an 8-speed diesel with no paddles and it wouldn't change in D(rive), only when the stick was left in S mode

That is just how it is. When it's on D with no paddles there is no way to change gear. You have to stick it to Sport to be able to manually change.

I assume you drove 218d, how was it?

Actually I drove a 418d and a 520d with the 8-speed auto and a 220d with a manual...I'm still very conflicted on what to go for. I just ordered a manual one, but as I can still change options at this time, it's driving me mad!

The automatic in the 2 is the finest I have ever driven. But, if you enjoy four limbs and more brain cells engaged needed to drive a stick, even the best automatic isn't enough. So, what is more attractive to you?

This is my exact thoughts. Coming from some high end manuals I picked up a M235 as a third car and the auto box is by far the best I've ever driven in all modes! Really extremely well calibrated.

My 220i is Euro spec so might be a bit different. Also, I have the Sports Auto, not the standard auto.
- In Sport mode, the paddles work, of course. If you just select Sport, it works as a sports auto, but as soon as you flick a paddle it changes to manual mode and stays there.
- In Drive, the paddles do work, but it reverts to auto after a minute or so. So you can use the paddles to override the gearbox if you need to.
- In Sport+ mode, it won't upshift at the redline, but simply holds on the rev limiter. Perfect!

US M235. You can change gears with paddles in ANY mode. I have driven sticks my whole life and the 2 is my 3rd car and the AUTO is amazing. Its not a manual but it IS the single best non-manaul ever. This even includes dual clutches.
