So for GF who does a ton of miles I am looking at a 2.5 year old car with 26k on it, she'd have 24K miles to drive in a year and a half so as not to mileage out before timing out, then after that 3 years of unlimited miles. Sorry for going slightly off topic but as we all start thinking about extended warranties and whatnot good info to have.

I used to get BMW extended warranties on my cars, but I started looking at 3rd party extended warranty providers and found a few good ones and when you compare coverages and costs, you can get the same or better coverage (yrs and miles) for 50 - 60% of what BMW charges.

CPO/Gold is definitely NOT only drivetrain. I had things like hub bearings, window regulators, and AC issues covered by it. Basically anything mechanical is covered. It won't cover infotainment items such as the head unit, navi screen, and audio system components. It also won't cover wear and tear items like worn interior trim pieces. If anything, it's closer to new car warranty than drivetrain.

Normally I'd never get an extended warranty, but it seems like cars these days are getting harder to work on. Has anyone seen issues that just couldn't be fixed by an independent shop or issues where the difference between independent and dealer prices are negligible because of the new tech?

Just an FYI for folks looking to do this in combination with a lease buy-out or if you are buying a CPO car, if you add the maintenance as well it does drop your interest rate quite a bit. Granted this isn't apples-apples since I was doing a 3-series, but I just turned in GF's diesel on Saturday and replaced it with CPO gas. Anyway the note went from 2.9% to 1.49% based on adding the maintenance. So adding the maintenance ended up costing me only $1500, which is one brake job. And since I am only planning on keeping the car 3 years, figure 60% of that I will actually pay for (did a 5-year note since the $ was so cheap).

Check with GOLFFRR from the pricing thread, I think his dealership writes a LOT of these at good deals and may not need to see the car. How it all works I am not entirely sure, but he and I chatted about it quite a while ago.

Yeah just put in a little work and then decide. The worst kick in the balls is you decide not to get it for $3K and find out a month later you could have had it for $1500 and would have gotten it for that.

Oh man, same here. I had $15,000 of covered repairs to my '07 E90 between 55k and 85k miles. Thank god I had a legit aftermarket warranty. Best $2,200 I've ever spent.

I took the BMW plan for 7 years/70k miles, based on my usage. As part of the original deal, it was about two grand, part of that due to the lower mileage. I figured one trans repair in the last three years would make it worthwhile, but it is a crapshoot, of course. Given the direction of the industry for manual trans, I do plan to make this car a keeper.
