cigarette outlet in back seat not working
I just recently discovered that the 12v outlet in the backseat does not work. I plugged in different chargers, etc and none worked. I checked the fuses and they seem fine. Is there anything else I should check. I took the trim off at the back of the center console to look at the rear of the outlet and it looks fine.
I have an appointment in a couple of weeks but just wanted to see what you guys think. |

There is something different about the one in the back. I have one of these rechargeable LED flashlights that fits in a 12v power receptacle. BMW part number 63310432670. The light fits in both the front and the rear 12v outlets, but it only works in the rear outlet. I also have this USB charger. BMW part number 65 41 2 166 411. It works in both 12v outlets.
I've read in other threads that the front outlet is physically deeper than the rear one, so some power accessories do not make electrical contact. That would explain why the LED flashlight works in the rear outlet but not the front. However, since the USB charger works in either outlet, I can't really explain why an accessory would work in the front outlet but not the rear unless there was no power to the rear outlet.

never mind. As mentioned in my OP, I thought I looked at the fuse and nothing was wrong. Decided to take a second look, this time with a volt meter on continuity test and saw one of the fuse was out. It turned out to be one of the socket fuses. Guess I didn't look closely enough the first time. Changed it and fixed everything

What size was the fuse (amps?). I just got an air pump that makes a big deal about making sure you have a 15A socket, and all I could find was the manual that lists an outrageous max-amps for all the power ports at once (something like 150A, so I assumed they are all at least 15A). Did you blow it with a high load, or did it just go bad on its own?

Rear 12V Port
Glad you found the problem and was an easy fix. However, it should be pointed out that there is a difference between the front and rear 12V ports. Some devices will fit in both, but only work in the rear. I recently bought a USB charger from Amazon and it works fine in the rear port; it also fits the front port, but does not work there as I don't believe it makes the proper contact with the sides of the port. The difference seems to be in the depth of the ports, so if you purchase a USB charger, make sure it is designed for the particular port you want to use it with.
