FABSPEED MOTORSPORT | M235i Build Thread

Exactly 1 year ago on this day, I was blessed with the experience of taking delivery of my 2015 M235i. At the time I worked at a local BMW dealership near Fabspeed. I had a few friends that worked at Fabspeed so I made sure to swing by and check out the place with my new Bimmer. One of the performance specialists here informed me they were looking to redesign the Sport Cat Downpipe for the M235i. Coming from a fairly experienced background of tuning up cars, I thought this was a great first modification for the M235i. So I went ahead and allowed Fabspeed to use my car for development for the redesign, after only having the car for 10 days.

First impressions after adding the Sport Cat were stellar. I could not have been more impressed with the power increase and sound. The turbo hit hard, the car pulled, and I was in love. Our Sport Cat Downpipe is 110% the best first step in the modification process for the M235i.

The next step in the process was pumping up the exhaust volume. I had a few ideas about what type of system I wanted to go with but didn't want to rush into a decision. This is when I was reached out to again by Fabspeed to see if I was interested in helping develop our Muffler Bypass Exhaust System. Coming from the BMW background and knowing that the MPE is just a different axleback muffler, I figured I would get an even more aggressive sound with the full Muffler Bypass. I was right. The combination of the Sport Cat and Muffler Bypass is the perfect setup. Not only are the snaps, crackles and pops aggressive (especially on the downshifts), but it is absolutely streetable. I daily drive my M235i every day on both city streets and expressways without any issues at all. Once again, the Fabspeed team put together an amazing product and satisfied yet another customer. After my wonderful customer experience with Fabspeed, I decided to join the team!

Several months passed until I decided to pull the trigger on some suspension and wheels. I didn’t want to do full coilovers but I wanted a nice drop - I decided on the H&R Sport Springs. The install was easy the outcome was great, handling is much more impressive now.

After kicking around some ideas on what wheels to go with, I couldn’t keep my eyes off of the Brixton Forged WR3’s. I wanted to go with something that would really make people's head turn. I decided to go with a brushed face with a gloss lip in a rose gold finish. After a short lead time for a set of custom 3 piece wheels, they finally arrived. The wheels were designed to fit the factory MPSS’ for a more functional style. After mounting them on, I was in shock. These wheels really brought the life out of this car and gave it some character. The guys at Brixton Forged really are artists in what they design. The precision is undeniable and the customer service is top notch.

Stay tuned for more!

Nice work they do! Any drone between 1500-3000 rpm?

There is a slight resonance from 2800-3000 rpm, but nothing an upshift or downshift can't fix .

Nice writeup, Bobby. Great setup! Really digging the wheels. And of course, I know how amazing your car sounds

Personally I've found that the pops and burbles are more 'progressive' than stock. ie, if I drive it moderately, the pops are tame. But if I load up the throttle, then it gets exponentially more aggressive! Pretty cool.

My fav is loading up 3rd gear and then downshifting into 2nd before letting off the throttle. It's like a rapid fire gun lol. Just did a backroad drive with the national CCA chapter and got tons of compliments on the exhaust!

Thanks! Yes, once you relearn how to drive the car with the exhaust setup, you can get some really loud cracks. It makes me feel like a kid again !

My wallet is trying so hard to get me to back out of this thread. I am on a crash course for the bypass and maybe the Sport Cat DP. I think you've said before it'll throw a light without a tune?

No CEL with the 200 cell cat. But yes if fully catless.

Xiaoxi is correct! Our Sport Cat Downpipe does not throw any CELs.

+1 on those wheels looking spectacular on your car. I could see myself with a non rose gold set (since my car is Estoril) but I'm afraid to think what they probably cost!

Have you dynoed what the sport cat and full exhaust have added up to in actual hp gains? I'm considering the same thing but it would be great to know the numbers of our exact car. after adding those.

I'd be happy to get you some pricing! I'm sure we can work out a deal. Check your PMs.

Also, The Sport Cat dyno chart was kindly posted by MrBucket (thank you). The rest of the exhaust system isn't going to pick up much noticeable power, mainly just sound.

Just a quick update:

After installing some ER chargepipes, since we all know the OEM ones aren't so efficient, I decided to get the car tuned from our in-house tuner. I am super happy with the results and how smooth everything feels; it's a completely different car. The car made about 350hp/400tq with a wonderful powerband. Check out the dyno video below!

I assume you did an ECU tune? Is that a service you guys make available to the public?

Yes we did an ECU tune on the car. This is something we just started recently offering to the public. If you would like more information on it, feel free to shoot me a PM, email, or give me a call and I'd be happy to chat.

How's the sound during cold start with your setup?

I won't lie, cold starts are fairly aggressive. I've definitely had louder cars with much louder cold starts but I would by lying if I said it was quite. It's decently loud but mellows out after about 10-15 seconds.

Either I have really cool neighbors and they haven't complained yet, or it really isn't that bad.

Hi,

Do you plan to make the catted downpipe for the M240i too? Looking for some power and sound (but as I drive a convertible most exhaust do not fit)
