Shifting into neutral when moving by accident

When changing gears manually, I use the paddle shifters most of the time. But I use the gear lever when the steering wheel is turned to an extent that I can't keep my fingers on the paddles.

This is fine when I've pushed the gear lever to the left already. But sometimes, I use the paddle shifters when it is still in drive. And sometimes I forget the lever is not already pushed to the left.

It's Ok if I'm trying to change up a gear - can't push the lever backwards when in drive. But if I'm trying to change down (by pushing the lever forward), I end up putting it into neutral.

Is that very damaging to the gear box to change into neutral and then back into drive again when the car is moving?

Only slightly damaging.
