Has anyone applied a paint sealant to their car? Which one? DIY or at a detail shop?

When I bought mine, the dealer offered Cilajet for the low, low price of $1600 (included interior protectant also). They claimed I would not have to apply wax for 5 years.

I have used Wolfgang Deep Gloss sealant for the past 5 years and it is great. I started using it on my black A5 and have continued with this car. It is very easy to apply and remove. You must clean the surface properly before you start or you will trap all that dirt and debris under it. If you buy the "twins" you get a cleaner and sealant in a set. I clay bar, use the cleaner then apply the sealant. The next day, as it has to cure for 12 hours, I apply carnuba wax. Beautiful results. One of the best you'll find out there.
Right now everyone seems to be sold out and I can't buy any. The stuff lasts a long time and goes a long way but I've used mine up.

I'll agree with Cumberlandjames. WGDGPS is good stuff. Fortunately it is readily available in the states right now. Another extremely durable LSP, last step protectant, would be Collinite 845. The key is to prep the paint properly with a clay bar or equivalent if you have bonded contaminants in the paint, then polish out any swirls, scratches, marring from the clay bar, etc. Then seal.

What about the ceramic coatings? I hear/read that the Wolfgang Uber and Pinnacle Black Label ceramic paint coatings are great. Anyone use these?

I applied Chemical Guys Jet Seal 109 when I got the car last September and it has held up well. I typically wash weekly, wax monthly and have used a couple of different detailing sprays after wash/wax and in between to help maintain the sealant.

I put the DP Poli-Coat Paint Sealant from Autogeek on my car and it's held up very well. I did two coats and let them cure overnight before I buffed them off. I waxed after and it's lasted a long time, over a year, and it's still beading/sheeting water off well.

ceramic coatings are great and work for up to a year. Hard to justify the cost tho. But it really does make your car look amazing after a quick wash.

My car was detailed by the dealer ... waxed.. Do I need to strip the wax before sealing or can I put the sealant right on top of the wax?

If I can't just seal, can I just clay the car then use the sealant?

I use nufinish once a year polish as the sealant, and then top it off with a carnauba wax. The sealant itself lasts a good 8-12 months. Main thing to keep beading is applying a layer of wax, spray wax at every wash. Only downside is the nufinish doesn't have the luster of other sealants, but topped with the carnauba wax, or even ultimate wax, it looks dope!

Proper preparation of the paint is necessary prior to application of the sealant if you want it to protect as intended.

Yes, you will want to remove the wax first. You can use a wash like Chemical Guys Clean Slate to strip it off (Dawn dishwashing liquid will work to). It is just substituted for your normal car wash soap. Since you have to wash the car before claying anyway, you are not adding a step.

You will hear some people saying claying removes wax and others say it doesn't- I'd play it safe and strip it first to make sure. I go a step further after wash/strip & clay and prep the paint with Chemical Guys Vertua Bond 408 Bonding Agent to ensure the surface is good to go for the application of the sealant.

I used SiShield and renew it once every couple months with the SiFinish, Wash Coat, and Reactivating Shampoo.

SiShield kit was just over a hundred dollars, do it yourself, and relatively easy. I was happy with the results. Is it as good as a pro? I'm sure it's not. But I didn't mess up the car, either, and to me it looks great. Have received many positive comments about how shiny it is as well.
