We are in the perfect place to be right now and that is with consistent product focus. Both Geneva and NYIAS are primarily on product focus at the current time because there is a lot coming this year. The NYIAS will feature product focus from both BMW and MINI with the significant (to the North American market) BMW X5 xDrive 40e making its world premiere.

In Shanghai we will show product integration with a concept car that will further supplement a particular segment but integrate the latest developments in design, connectivity, technology and materials.

Afterwards we move fully into product focus with the 3er/3er Touring LCI / M3 LCI and Competition Packet in May, and the road to the IAA Frankfurt with the all new BMW X1 and BMW 7er amongst other models expected under BMW , MINI and Rolls-Royce. Again consistent product focus. The continuation of our strategy when the management change over begins in May.
Scott your presence and contributions are invaluable and I thank you for coming on the forum to feed us info we desperately crave. As a BMW employee could you please walk over or send the execs an email and tell them to go and intern at Porsche to learn a thing or two and bring some of their product philosophies AND excitement to your company aka GT4, GT3 and GT3 RS.

Respectfully

-Tim

It's the lack of public knowledge that the M2 is even coming that baffles me. Here we are 9 months from SOP, and how many potential M2 customers are tying themselves into 3 or 4 year leases on other cars, simply because they have no idea such a car is even coming along??

I feel like there's a bit of a double standard here. Look at the GT4. What actual info was out before info came out right before Detroit? Nothing. You had spy shots and that's about it.

This is the second time I'm openly asking this. Why are people here expecting BMW to release info on a car that is not out? Did anyone ask Porsche to do the same? Did the general public know about the GT4? Does it even matter?

Don't get me wrong, I want to see the car as bad as you guys, but these questions and criticisms don't make much sense to me personally.

I'm with you, but I think the attitude here is due to everyone being excited with the spy shots in January and the complete embargo on info since then. BMW releases a tease and we can't take the wait any longer. It's like getting the tip in once and then be told you are to wait months to go all the way. Not many withstand the wait haha

Especially when there was a complete M2 at Genava in Donington Grey... Why not release a darkened image showing the silhouette or the proportions at least... With the caption "It's coming" or "watch out GT4" or anything just to get the excitement through the roof! Lol

Exactly correct. Something that identifies its intent. A darkened image with some communication on what customer the M2 is going after.

I have called the porsche twice about the GT4. I can get one in july!

Still hoping for news about the M2 soon. Otherwise it could be a GT4 for me.

Why the impatience? BMW will release the M2 when it is good and ready to do so. They have to complete final tests before the final sign off and that includes cold weather and hot weather testing which we will see during the duration of the year. Some pre-ex emptive marketing will begin soon.

BMW better be sure they have someone test it in humid 90 degree weather around mid-day while wearing a suit for at least 2 hours at a time. Leather/vinyl seats are awful in the american southern summer.

That's where ventilated seats enter into the picture. Of course the 2/3 series don't get those even if customers are willing to pay for it.

Another shortsighted move by BMW...

Hope BMW develolment is reading this. Yes we can upgrade to a larger luxo barge to get ventilated seats but what I'd we don't want to...

Why not the impatience?
Start of production is few months away and we still know almost nothing about the car. I'm glad Marketing efforts will begin soon as it will drive awareness and create the need for the product. In the meantime however, why let the competition chew at your heels, it is illogical at best?

I think you nailed it right here. The impatience is due to the fact that there are so many other companies revealing incredible cars, while BMW gave us a minivan. And we know the m2 is coming but there's nothing to keep us mildly excited.

If the auto market was boring right now it wouldn't be a big deal. But with all the other competitors going full throttle it's kind of like "what the heck, BMW?"

I get what you're saying - there isn't requirement that BMW should give us info or whatever - however, they themselves have helped create anticipation around the release of the M2, yes?

They have an employee or employees making comments on this board of enthusiasts, and it simply stirs up the pot. Do we like it? Of course. But when that same person makes a mention about March, people are naturally going to be looking for different types of information since we are already 1/2 through the month.

Do we potentially become irrational? Perhaps. But instead of capitalizing on it and cultivating more interest in the car, there has been a bit of lag in new info - and when that happens, people start looking elsewhere.

+1 I have to wear that stuff to work, and it's very hot in Dallas. I would love the option of ventilated seats.

There really wasn't. My friend was following it closely because that was most likely going to his car. We knew absolutely nothing about the engine (that they were going to stuff the 3.8L), that it was going to be MT only... these were all rumors.

There were just spy shots. That's it. So how is the M2 any different in that regards to information?

You got one side saying that the M2 will be too heavy for what it is. Then you got guys like you saying it needs cooled and heated seats. Can't win

Again, I ask you, so what? That is not how it works. Really, what else do you guys need to know, short of a full reveal? We already know the engine and trans, and roughly what it'll look like. Hell that's more than we ever knew about the GT4 before its release.

If the thought of a compact, RWD, manual transmission BMW for a somewhat affordable price (this is relative of course) doesn't do enough to excite you guys on its own, then I don't know what will.

Next week is officially the first week in Spring. I fully expect more spy shots at the very least to come out soon enough.

Thank god they didn't. If they come out with "Watch out GT4", I think they should all be fired. If you guys are expecting this car to in any way match the GT4, I promise you you'll be bitterly disappointed.

So what marketing did Porsche do with the GT4 prior to its online release?

Don't worry, humidity in CT isn't far behind. I honestly would check the $2k ventilated option without blinking an eye.

I'm going to give the GTS a very hard look before settling into an M2 or an M3 because of that option alone.

The larger point being, and since BMW is a for-profit entity, if I want to give them money for something, they should do their best to collect it.
I hope they wise up and adopt Porsche's "a la carte" approach. It's a huge money maker while attracting additional customers due to the highly customizable configurations...

Rant over.

Off to a quick weekend drive with the 3er...
