2015 228 without upgraded suspension
Just started to autocross this year as a novice. When I bought my car I didn't plan on that. So now I have a slight regret on not getting the track handling package when I ordered my car. Anyway, can that be retro fit?
Also I do feel that the stock 17" with the runflat were not so good at all for autocross. So I just got a used set of 436m wheel here at the forum. Hoping next year when the season starts again that would make a different. I did notice that my 228xi dip quite a bit during cornering so I started to worry that the wider staggered setup might not work on my car which does not have the upgrade suspension. Any thoughts on that? |

Wheel clearance should be fine if you stay with the BMW Stock Wheels - 18x7.5 and 18x8. You need to keep in mind whether you want to run in Stock or Modified classes. I think there are very limited suspension modifications if any allowed in the Stock Classes. Check you local club's rule book. Even upgrading the wheels may be an issue if your model car did not offer the wheel widths as an option. But if you have a Sport or M-Sport model you can run 18x7.5 square or staggered with 18x8 in the rear.

My 228 doesn't have the M sport line or package. And the stock wheels are square 205/50/R17. So the new ones I am getting are off a stock 235m, and they are staggered at 225/40/R18 and 245/35/R18. So they are about 20mm and 40mm wider.
That's why i worry about if my suspension would work. In terms of my autocross rules, since I am just doing the local BMW CCA chapter ones, I would stay in my class for just changing wheels. |

Since you have the xdrive you are pretty limited in your choices. Retrofit of the THP will probably not be feasible since the suspension is adaptive and will require more than just a simple swap of shocks and springs. Your best bet is to look into the bilstein b14 coil overs.

I have a 228xdrive with the staggered 225/245 setup (conti runflat summer tires). I think that the factory always ensures full clearance through entire suspension travel(hence the 'conservative' sizes compared to aftermarket and tuners) so you should be OK with this. And with the summer tires as original order, they set the speed limiter to 155 or 160.

If you wanna stay in the stock class then get RE71R's and Bilstein shocks custom valved to the m sport or m perf. springs (grey area for changing springs that didn't come with the car, check local rules). You'll have trouble getting more camber since you won't be able to run m3/4 LCA's.
