I've noticed that the sunroof on the 2 is not consistent when it is open. I have seen some pictures where the glass retracts above the car. on mine, the room retracts into the car.

picture is of the roof partially open. full open slides to the back, into the roof.

thoughts?

It always retracts into the car. You could vent it, then it'll raise but won't slide back.

To vent, simply press the button in the middle.

A3 / S3 is the only one I can think of where the glass goes on top like you're describing.

How are you getting it in that position? if you push the back of the switch up toward the roof (back meaning towards rear of vehicle) it should tilt up. If you slide the switch back from the front towards the rear of the vehicle it should tilt down and the wind deflector in the front should go up, think it's called comfort position or something. Meant to have windows down then crack the roof to eliminate that buffering noise. Think you are stopping before fully getting into comfort mode.

Don't remember, do you have a convertible too? My brother did for a bit that roof was sexy as hell. I'm intrigued by soft top operation in general, and the way the front section turns into the cover (unlike most where the trunk flips up and swallows roof) was pretty slick.

yah that was it. I was sliding the switch back to the resistance point and letting go. barely cracking the window. it's a neat mode it you ask me. ?

Yeah you have to push it beyond that point to get full open, then shove the back end up for tilt. It really does work to kill the cabin pressure to make things much more comfortable.

Nope. Two sunroof coupes. But I need a cabriolet. Will you explain it to my wife?

The engineers that design folding tops are geniuses!

The new X1 and 7 series both do it as well.

Why, how? It doesn't accomplish anything. You're just having air flow into the compartment where the glass part of the sunroof sits when you have the sunroof open.

That's a tough one. May need to ease her into the idea w the new targa, that thing is pretty slick. Either that or a little bs toy like an old Alfa so she'll enjoy the top down motoring then her inner racer chick will want something with more power.

You could always just tell her that random internet strangers on your BMW forum told you it was a good idea when you bring home a new $125k cab, although that would go over like a pork chop at a bar mitzvah.

Believe it or not I have already used that strategy. It took years to pull off. Went from MG's to Triumphs, to Healeys to Jaguars (All cars I restored.)...then jumped to a Boxster. She won't fall for that again!

A while back I visited an exotic car dealership that a sold pre-owned high end stuff like Lambos and Bentleys. (Yea, like that would ever happen.) The sales guy was aggressive and later tracked me down for a potential sale follow up. He somehow got my wife's number. That was ugly. "But dear, I SWEAR I didn't sign anything." I haven't seen our checkbook ever since and my personal MasterCard has something like a $250 credit limit. So I don't think pleas from the forum will carry much weight.

But wait, if she sees I am on a website about car addicts maybe she will see I am trying to get help and she'll throw me a bone! Nah, only in my dreams.

If it makes you feel any better my father screwed up paying some bills 40 years ago (used the wrong checking account), and he still gets $20 for lunch money every day and that's his only access to capital. He has started laundering his cars through me though, so if you've got a kid that could be an option. There's the whole "damn kid bought another car that won't fit in his garage so we will store it here" game you can play.

Otherwise I think your only prayer may be something investment grade as a gift for her - i.e. get an old bathtub speedster and restore it for her. Won't lose money and it's technically hers - women all like shiny presents.

When in doubt, I compare everything "bad" I want to do to shooting heroin. You could spend the cabrio money on heroin, that would be much worse. Yes, we suspend disbelief here and imagine the only two options for $125K are a convertible or a drug overdose.
