Engine Control Module being replaced

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Hi all-

I own a '14 M235i AT with only 21k miles. Sunday night it threw a CEL with no apparent symptoms, and yesterday my local dealer told me it needed a new Engine Control Module. Luckily it still has another month of warranty (and since this is emissions-related it'd be covered up to 8yr/80k miles).

This car has already had the entire power steering rack replaced and some suspension parts, and now another fairly significant failure...it has me worried. I know it's a fairly high-performance car, and that maintenance over will be more expensive than average, but this seems like an awful lot in only 21k miles. I'm starting to wonder if this dealer isn't doing their due diligence in diagnosing what might be smaller problems, and instead just expensing major repairs to BMW while it is still under warranty...am I crazy?

Also, if this thing is going to rack up significant repair bills in the next couple of years, should I go ahead and unload it soon? I love the car, but this is a little frustrating.

If you're still under warranty you can pay to extend via CPO process if you want, just don't let the original lapse.

Interesting idea, I hadn't thought of that. Might be worth seeing what that would cost...

Depend on if you want 1 or 2 years of coverage, included maint etc. plus you pay a couple of hours of shop time for inspection. They will only CPO if car is verified to be good.

It's not a high performance car and it shouldn't be like that. I wouldn't consider all of that maintenance, they are failures. If it were me, I'd be shopping around...

In the process of diagnosing suspension/steering pops and creaks, the left strut guide support and left inner and outer tie rods were replaced. That didn't solve the issue, so the entire EPS rack was replaced.

I should have also mentioned that during this service visit, they also found a transmission leak that required dropping the exhaust and the drive shaft to access the rear transmission bracket.

Fair enough. Since it has the ///M designation (though not a true M car, I know), I consider it fairly high performance compared to your average coupe or sedan.

Sometimes you get a car, built on a Friday.. Sounds like this may be one of those cars.

Knocking on wood, but my '15 hasn't been in the dealer for anything aside from oil changes and software updates. This makes me comfortable owning it out of warranty, considering what I've put the car though while I've owned it. I had a VW that put me through the ringer, while under warranty, and I never considered keeping it past the second/third visit. And anything with regard to "bugs" and electrical diagnostic stuff, that would be paramount, in cost, out of warranty, I would be sure to stay well away from it, drivetrain issues notwithstanding.

I have never had any of these parts fail on any BMW I have owned, including one I had for a dozen years that I drove around for a while with both rear springs cracked. Sounds like a loser or a scam.

A scam? As in, the dealer writing up unnecessary work and charging it to BMW? I do have that thought in the back of my mind, but it's a big reputable dealer, so hopefully not. I'm hoping I've just had some bad luck, but if a big repair bill hits soon after the warranty is up I'll probably unload it then.

Got it back today...with a new Engine Control Module (DME) and a new Charge Air Duct because the original "fell apart" when removing it...

It's not unusual for the charge pipe on BMWs to break. Especially if it has to be removed for some reason. Unfortunately that has been a trend since BMW went turbo over a decade ago. You would think they would beef them up more by now.

Interesting, that's good to know. That does seem pretty strange for it to still be happening-it's not a cheap part...

I thought there was also a way to just pay for extended warranty, but perhaps that is the same as the CPO option BEM mentioned (IIRC it is the silver/gold/platinum system). Would seem prudent on this car, but on the other hand, it is low miles for a '14 and might be better used as down payment on s/t newer, if you lack confidence.

I thought so too. I was offered the option to extend when I bought my m240i this past winter, but I declined because I was also told that I can choose to extend later before my warranty is up.

Same thing happened to me. There was a knocking on the steering and they first replaced the rods and then put a new rack

Interesting. BMW has definitely lost money on mine, since they've been charged $8k in warranty work in the last 4 months alone...

It's all the same shit but if you do it when you first buy the car you avoid $200 in shop time for the inspection.

But if you get it up front and sell or total the car or something and never use it you're out the money.
