Car won't keep time...CEL is on

I posted this in the tuning section, but didn't have much luck getting any responses. Hoping someone might have an idea where to begin!

My 2015 M235i won't keep time...in that the time displayed in both the instrument cluster and nav screen never changes. You can set it, but it'll never advance, either in automatic mode or manual mode. Additionally, the car has thrown the codes of P15FD and P15FB, which both relate to "Engine switch-off time: Too slow during engine operation" and "Engine switch-off time: Too slow during after-run"

Would it be safe to assume that because the clock isn't 'ticking', that it's thinking the engine is 'dieseling' after shut-off, thus tripping a code?

My rationale in thinking this is that further reading about these codes indicates "The diagnostic function compares the internal timers of the DME and the instrument cluster when the ignition is switched on again while the control module is in its shutdown phase"

Could...could a simple battery disconnect kick start this damn clock??

That's the first thing that I thought of after reading your post. I would try that and leave it disconnected for at least 20 minutes before hooking it back up. After you get it back together then try and set everything again, drive it, and then see if the codes come back.

Glad to see I'm not the only one who thought that...I will do that and report back. My web searches hadn't yielded many results about these codes in particular, so if I can solve this hopefully it'll help someone else in the future. Thanks!

Yep...disconnecting the battery for 20 minutes fixed the issue. What a strange anomaly; glad it was simple! Hope this helps someone else in the future.

Hello Draab2006

I have the same code P15FB on my '14 328i xdrive - External Engine Off Timer Incrementation Too Slow During Engine Running

My clock is also frozen.

My car was coded in 2015. Has yours been coded?

I am going to try and disconnect the battery for 20 min and see what happens.

Disconnecting battery for 20 minutes seems to have fixed the problem.

CEL did not come back on after driving for 1 hour.

Clock is keeping time again. Fingers crossed car doesn't blow up.

Just stumbled on this and what a big help! I had my car running on battery during testing of new retrofitted lights and afterward it has not kept time - every after two resets. I'll have to try the tactic of disconnecting the battery to see if that solves my issue.

Thanks for posting!

Our cars are computers on wheels - similar to re-booting a computer solves the problem! Good to know, thanks!
